Tracing my great grandfather Rees Evans, Llangeler
« on: Sunday 18 September 22 18:09 BST (UK) »
I noticed an Evans of Llangeler thread several years ago but can’t find any trace of my family there. I have come up against a brick wall regarding Rees Evans born 1871 in Llangeler to John Evans and Anne Nancy Evans (nee Griffiths) and siblings including Anne, Margaret, Ellen and others.

Rees died aged 37 in 1909. He had 4 children including my grandfather David John born 1900 - there was jane (the eldest) Mary and Elizabeth. Apparently jane brought the kids up - I can find no trace of a mother. I’m reaching out on the very slim chance someone might have a lead. I did find what I thought was Rees in a 1901 census as a drapers hawk which makes sense as his parents and sisters were all wool weavers and his younger sister at 13 was doing things with bobbins!

Hoping there might be someone who has a hint

Thank you

Jo

Welcome to Rootschat.

Is this the 1901 census in Pontypridd?

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XSM2-4D9

Rees is a draper's traveller. Hawk has been written above the occupation by someone grouping the occupations for statistical purposes. There's a similar notation of below on the previous page for men working below ground.

Where have you found Rees in other census entries?
Cornwall: Allen, Bevan, Bosisto, Carnpezzack, Donithorn, Huddy, James, Retallack, Russell, Vincent, Yeoman
Cards: Thomas (Llanbadarn Fawr)
Glam: Bowler, Cram, Galloway, James, Thomas, Watkins
Lincs: Coupland, Cram
Mon: Cram, Gwyn, John, Philpot, Smart, Watkins
Pembs: Edwards (St. Dogmael's)
Yorks: Airey, Bowler, Elliott, Hare, Hewitt, Kellett, Kemp, Stephenson, Tebb

Yes that’s the correct census - it’s so odd that Rees is alone with a one year old son and a boarder - why wouldn’t he have left this child with the other 3 older siblings?

I have found only a few other records - a census when he was described as a scholar but by the 1891 census he was no longer at home with the rest of the family. Then this 1901 census and then a record of his death and that’s it.

Wow, thank you so much - what a sad story, but a sense of closure - dead of tuberculosis at 37. My next quest will be to track down his widow. It’s very strange that both newspaper reports talk about him leaving 2 children. I’d always been told my grandfather (Rees’ youngest child) had 3 older sisters with the oldest of them bringing up the others. Perhaps 2 of the older ones were from a previous marriage …..

Where and when were the other children born?

It may be possible to find them on the census with more information and so find their mother. Or find the birth registrations and therefore the mother's maiden name. There's more than one David John Rees birth registered Pontypridd of an age to be 1 on the 1901 census.

By the way, no boarder on the 1901 census, Joseph is a visitor and he's the grandfather of Rees.

Thank you so much....yes, the penny has dropped that Joseph listed on the 1901 wales census together with Rees Evans and his child, 1 yr old David John Evans is indeed Rees' grandfather.  Can't you tell I'm new to all of this! I will try and track down Rees' other children via the census but I only have the full name of one of them - Elizabeth G Evans (married to Henry Watkins). The family history around the other two is hazy.
