Elusive birth record for Joseph Connell about 1853
« on: Wednesday 21 September 22 17:24 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me find a baptism or other info for Joseph Connell, Son of Agnes Connell, around 1853?
This date is taken from the gravestone in Closeburn, Dumfriesshire which says he was born 13 November 1853.
The 1861 census gives his birth  year as 1854 and birthplace as Kirkbean, Kirkcudbrightshire.
His marriage (to Annie Kirk) and death certificates both give a reputed father of John or Hough (Hugh?) Shiel(d)s, a Seaman.

Have you looked on Scotlands People under both surnames?  Must admit I can’t see anything obvious

Yes I have, thanks.
I can’t see any baptisms for anyone with the surname Shield or Shields which would fit.
Nor any Con* births in Dumfriesshire or Kirkcudbrightshire.

There is no reference in the Kirkbean kirk session minutes between 1852 and 1855. Do the censuses all give his birthplace as Kirkbean?

Yes although his mother Agnes was a farm labourer at Heath Hall, Dumfries in 1851 and potentially that’s where she got pregnant.

This date is taken from the gravestone in Closeburn, Dumfriesshire which says he was born 13 November 1853.
The 1861 census gives his birth  year as 1854 and birthplace as Kirkbean, Kirkcudbrightshire.
If you look at the original of any census, they only give the age of people i.e. Ancestry etc. which give an 'approx. birth year' have no idea whether the person was born before/after the census i.e. can be out by 1 yr.
