MAZS Family before 1880
« on: Thursday 22 September 22 05:27 BST (UK) »
This is my first post on Roots Chat.
I am building my family tree and my grandmothers maiden name is MAZS, I have traced back to Thomas Mazs who married Margaret Wilson in 1880, Craignook Farm in Crammond (Scotland).
This is as far as I can go, I have tried census, birth certificates, marriage certificate for parents but there is nothing.
From their marriage certificate I have Thomas's parents (John Mazs and Mary Davidson).
MAZS has a number of variations MAZE, MAIZE, MAISE, MASE, i think i have tried them all.
Is there anyone out there that can help? tips on searching or have found this line in their family tree (hello cousin).
John

Hi John

Welcome to RootsChat from me too  :)

You viewed the marriage registration for Thomas and Margaret on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Were Thomas's parents still showing as alive when he married?

What age was Thomas when married Margaret in 1880?

When and where was your grandmother born?

Did Thomas show as widowed when he married in 1880?

There is this possible 1901 census entry for him and family:

Thomas Maze 64 Coal Miner - Hewer b. Mochrum Wigtownshire
Margaret Maze 39 b. Biggar, Lanarkshire
David Maze 18
Henry Maze 16
James Maze 11
William Maze 5
Margaret Maze 3
Janet Maze 1

Address: Steelend Row Office, Saline, Fife

The reason I asked whether he had been married before is this marriage:

Thomas Mase and Mary Davidson (too many of these!)
Marriage 13 Oct 1859 Kirkinner, Wigtown

The marriage reg would let you confirm his parents' name to see if there is a match with what you have.

There is then this 1861 census entry:

Thomas Mase 20 Head Ag Lab b. Mochrum, Wigtownshire
Mary Mase 33 b. Ireland
Elisabeth Ledgerwood 14 Step Daughter
Catherine Ledgerwood 12
Fanny V A Ledgerwood 7
John D Mare 7 Months Son

Address: Kildarroch, Kirkinner, Wigtown

Wondering if this is Thomas with his family?

From 1851:

John Mais 41 Agricultural Labourer b. Ireland
Dorethy Mais 12
Thomas Mais 10
John Mais 6

Address: Airylick, Mochrum, Wigtownshire

Added: Found this entry now on FreeCen. John, father, is showing as widowed by 1851 www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/59066eabe9379091b1eefd1f/thomas-mais-1851-wigtownshire-mochrum-1841-?locale=en

Possible sister Dorothy looks to have married a William Stratton and they made their life in the US from available records.

I think this is them in 1861:

William Stratin 24 Ag lab b. Ireland
Dorothia Stratin 22 b. Ireland
George Stratin 7 months b. Mochrum

Address: High Milton, Mochrum

Dorothea Maize and William Stratin married in 1858 in Mochrum Wigtownshire. Marriage shows on the SP index.

They show in the US from at least the 1870 US Census. I think Dorothy died in 1909 in California www.findagrave.com/memorial/134438731/dorothy-stratton

1841 for the family at Mochrum:

www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5a158f65f4040b9d6eab9534/dorithia-mize-1841-wigtownshire-mochram-1839-?locale=en

Looks like the family came over to Scotland just before Thomas's birth. Thomas showing as c. 4 months old in this entry. Census that year was on 6 June which give you an approximate birth month for Thomas around Feb 1841?

From the 1851 and 1841 census entry, mother Mary Davidson would have died after the birth of youngest son John who is showing as 6 years old in 1851, so anytime from 1845 or so up to 1851.

Adding more family here...

Thomas's father John. I think he likely remarried in 1852:

JOHN MAISE and JANET MARSHALL
16/09/1852
Ref 892/20 233
Mochrum

1861 Census entry for him

John Maize 62 (ag Labourer) Pauper b. Ireland
Janet Maize 47
Annie Griffin 15 step daughter
Mary Maize 11
Alexander Maize 7
Janet Maize 4

Address High Milton, Mochrum

The family are in Barrachan Village, Mochrum in 1871 (showing as MAZE on the transcript I am looking at).

A possible death showing for him in 1873:

JOHN MAIZE
Age 73
----- mother's maiden name not showing
1873
Rf 892/ 2
Mochrum

His mother's maiden name may not have been known by the informant to his death perhaps. His second marriage in 1852 was pre the start of official registration so will not include his parents' details.
