Gas Yard
« on: Thursday 22 September 22 09:09 BST (UK) »
Hello all
Can someone tell me please what the Gas Yard would have been in Newcastle upon Tyne in circa 1850? I have a suspected ancestor who gives his occupation as 'labourer Gas Yard' in the England Census 1851. Place of residence was in All Saints Parish Newcastle upon Tyne Northumberland.
Thank you in advance
Karen.

It would be the yard of a gasworks, where coke and coal would be stored. See:

There were several gasworks in Newcastle:  https://historicengland.org.uk/research/results/reports/8018/TheManufacturedGasIndustry_Volume3
