Any more avenues to find out what happened to Hugh Gale?
« on: Friday 23 September 22 00:59 BST (UK) »
Hi there

I have been looking for an elusive possible ancestor of mine called Hugh Gale.

He was born on 10/01/1886 in Leytonstone in Essex to Charles William Gale and Fanny Kibble-Thorne. They had 3 sons and many daughters. Hugh grew up in Leytonstone near West Ham.

He is in the 1891/1901 censuses, but not apparently in 1911, then reappears in 1921. By then, he is married to Agnes Isabella Davey. She dies in 1936, he is the informant on the death record, but then I cannot find him in the 1939 register. I can find no death record for him either.

I have found records of him being in the Bedfordshire regiment in the 1900s, presumably discharged by 1921, but I have no idea where he goes after 1936.

I wanted to see if anyone might have any “light bulb ideas” to track him down post 1936 or in 1911?

Thank you for any insight you might be able to provide

Just a thought - although it does not tie in with the 1936 death - have you considered  the John Gale with the same birth date in 1839 living in Leystone with an Agnes E   :-\

Kay

Added - there is a marriage in the 1937 to an Agnes E Maguire??

Think I may have located him - perhaps he didn't like the name Hugh and after his wife's death in 1936 he decided to call him himself John Hugh Gale.

If so, he remarried as John H. Gale to an Agnes E Maguire in Dec.qtr.1937 Essex South Western.

I noted on an online tree that Hugh was born 10/1/1886 and searched 1939 index in Essex for a Gale with this exact birthdate and up pops a John H. Gale in Leyton.

John H. Gale died Dec. qtr. 1959 Essex South Western and Essex Burials and Cremations on Ancestry shows that he was John Hugh Gale died 19/12/1959, burial or cremation 23/12/1959 Newham.

Just to confirm there was no John Hugh Gale born ca.1886 anywhere in the country.   So, with 'John H Gale' having second name of Hugh and with exact same date of birth as your Hugh I really think they are one and the same person.

I think you are right Annette and wonder whether this might be John Hugh in 1911 - The surname is Gale on the image https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWGK-D2Y

Perhaps he married a Catholic and added John when he converted; I had a relative who did this (also John) and it caused me some confusion.  He later dropped it after he divorced his wife.  About the same time period as your Hugh.

 Hi there

I hadn’t checked this page in a couple of weeks.

I asked for a light bulb and got some chandeliers from the palace of versailles  ;D

Thank you all so much. This has opened a new door for me on this.

One thought I had is that hugh and Agnes had a son called John in 1913 who died as an infant in 1914. He may be the reason hugh took the name john in later life, although that wouldn’t explain the 1911 use of John.

I will keep searching with renewed vigour   :D

Best wishes

The 1937 marriage certificate for Agnes and John Hugh indicates that his father is William gale, carpenter, deceased. That fits with what I know of him.
Thank you for lighting the way.
