Great Grandfather birth confusion
« on: Tuesday 27 September 22 17:48 BST (UK) »
My great Grandfather's birth is a mystery. Throughout his life, he has used many different variations of what I think is his name - John Edward Thornton Chappell.

He is one of 9 siblings (6 of them survived to childhood) and all of them, I've found births for. Based on census data, his age at his death and his siblings' birth, I know that he could not be born until February 1882 at the earliest and March/April 1884.
I've search for his birth under John Chappell/John Edward Chappell/John Thornton Chappell. He must have a birth certificate as he married three times.

The only piece of information I have about his birth is a scrap of paper which he has put his birth date as the 2nd of November 1882 but there is no birth record for him.

The rest of his siblings were either born in Bristol or Stapleton, Gloucestershire.

What is also puzzling is that he is nowhere to be seen in the 1890 census.

I've tried ancestry, find-my-past and FreeBMD.

He would not have needed a birth certificate to get married.

Where have you found him in census entries? What are the names of his parents & siblings?

Then can you tell us the parent's names please, so we could search for baptisms at least 1880-1885

another post showing that John Edward Thornton Chappell married in Henley. DOB from free search on 1939 register is 2 Nov 1885 but his wife is younger so year might not be correct.

Possible first marriage in 1909 gives his father as Charles Chappell.
