Ship's name on an old crew list
« on: Saturday 01 October 22 14:27 BST (UK) »
Good morning everyone,

I've just joined Rootschat and I have a query regarding a ship name on an old crew list. The crewlist is of the sailing ship Parnell (Official number 77948) from May 1891 in Sydney - Australia. My wife's ancestor John Anderson (Master mariner licence 85369) b.1838 to Lerwick d.1905 Brisbane joined the vessel as 1st mate on the 16th May 1891. On these crew lists it will state the mariners previous vessel but I am having a really difficult time trying to interpret what it says. The Master (Captain) was Thurston Dale Dakin from Castletown and you can see his previous vessel was the Parnell as it says "same ship". But the line underneath for John is a whole different story. I believe it might say "Joined ... per Cintra". The ss Cintra was a steamship which ran from Brisbane where John lived down to Sydney and Melbourne. Sure enough I found a J Anderson as a passenger arriving in Sydney from Melbourne on the 7th May 1891 but this is just a guess really if it's him.

Any help in deciphering what it says will be greatly appreciated as this is a huge brick wall in my research.

Thank you everyone for any help you can offer

Kind regards

Pieter

Is it a signature of the person who was a witness like the others in that column?
Looks like James? Thorpe? with maybe something at the end of his name and then Cintra as the ship.

Thanks for all the comments thus far

J.A. (John Arthur) Bebb was the 2nd mate onboard and witnessed the signing of most of the crew. I find it interesting that he witnessed most of the crew, yet John's witness signature and potential ship was scribbled down really quickly...

Yes it could say James Thorpe as the man witnessing John signing on or it could be something totally different. That's what makes this crew list so hard, as I have seen so many others which are very easy to read.
