Latin sasine
« on: Sunday 02 October 22 21:41 BST (UK) »
This is a sasine from 1678.
As far as writing in sasines goes, it is pretty easy to read, but in Latin unfortunately.

I think it is Andrew Hamilton in little Drumclog getting land from Thomas Hamilton in Shawtonhill(?).
There are also mentioned William Cochran of Craig and, I think, his children Kertegen and William, but I don't know how they fit into the picture.

I would be grateful for a translation please.
Many thanks

Many thanks GR2.
The king given in the preamble as Charles II.

Here's the next little bit.
I do wish they'd put some relationships in these sasines!
There's nothing to say whether Thomas Hamilton of Shawtonhill is any relation to Andrew.
There are many Hamilton families around Strathaven - the Dukes of Hamilton were big landowners there.

This Andrew Hamilton features in the reports of the Battle of Drumclog in 1679 as, sometimes, 'laird of Drumclog'
This sasine states he is already 'in Little Drumclog' by 1678, but I can't find anything about the family prior to this.

... adjacent to the said lands with its houses, buildings, gardens, tofts, crofts, muirs, marshes parts, pendicles and pertinents whatsoever lying within the barony of Avendale, the regality of Hamilton and the sheriffdom of Lanark

I have adjusted the ending of the previous bit in light of this - "take" is the whole thing, so the bit of pasture will be called "the Tack".

Re relationships, I have often found that the best details about relationships are amongst the witnesses, where one is described as, for example "the third lawful son of ..." If it were practical to read the witnesses in ALL the sasines for the area, you might find your Cochrans witnessing other sasines and being helpfully designated there!

Thanks again GR2.

I'll keep that in mind about the witnesses.
I had thought about looking at other sasines for the area at the same time, but I'd have to look through hundreds, and you know how awful a lot of the handwriting is in a lot of them!
One day, when I've got absolutely nothing else to do ............. maybe!  :)
