On my granddad's birth certificate she is Margaret Ann, late Fazenfield, formerly Shepherd. Same on her other child's, my great uncle's birth certificate

Is her name recorded as Margaret Ann HOGAN, late FAZENFIELD, formerly SHEPHERD?

Just to clarify.....

The marriage to Daniel was in 1888.

Marriages Sep 1888

FEHSENFIELD,    Daniel
SHEPHEARD,  Margaret
Liverpool    8b   1

Margaret is a spinster aged 19 of 24 Eldon Street, Bevington, Liverpool, father James SHEPHEARD a wood carver.

In 1891, Daniel, Margaret and daughter Margaret are in Liverpool.

FEHSENFIELD, MARGARET  ALICE
Mother's maiden surname: SHEPHERD
GRO Reference: 1890  S Quarter in LIVERPOOL  Volume 08B  Page 6

In 1901 Margaret Jnr. is in Liverpool as the niece of Edward and Margaret GRAY.  Margaret's maiden surname was FAZENFELD (or whatever) so was probably Daniel's sister.

FEHSENFIELD, JOSEPH
Mother's maiden surname: SHEPHERD
GRO Reference: 1893  M Quarter in WEST DERBY  Volume 08B  Page 287
Probably died March quarter 1893

Daniel FEHSENFIELD remarried in 1904 as a bachelor, so unless Margaret also wanted to be a bigamist then it is unlikely she married HOGAN.

No spinster, just late Fazenfield, formerly Shepherd. Stephen was a dock labourer and grandfather was born 8th July 1895 at no. 2 Court 3 House Titchfield Street Liverpool. Birth registered on 20th August

Thanks Debra

Your information has helped fill out bits of what I'd already found. I had no idea about baby Joseph. I did find a baptism record for a baby Daniel, but says born only a few months before my grandfather so not to Margaret (although she's named as mother. I will need to check again later today).

It does very much look as though Ms and SH never married

When was Michael born? Was this a late baptism? What happened to him?

He was born 25th August 1904, baptised the next day

ADDED: and died Q4 1904

I'm confused. Does that mean Margaret got back with Daniel, her husband, after having children with Stephen Hogan, gave birth to Michael and then split with Daniel again? (Daniel married again 1904) Or was it untrue that Daniel Fazenfield was Michael's father?

I suppose my next step is to get the train up to Dublin and try to find help.

What information are you hoping to find in Dublin?

Thread "Margaret Ann Shepherd - a complicated life" from last year.

A reply on the Margaret Ann Shepherd topic said that mother's maiden surname for Daniel's birth registration was Hamilton. No Fazenfield-Hamilton marriage found. Suggestion that Daniel Fazenfield had a fling with a Margaret Hamilton. Someone pointed out that Daniel born 1895 was baptised in Anglican church whereas other Fazenfield and Hogan children were baptised in R.C. churches
Was there more than 1 Daniel Fazenfield in Liverpool?

Re Dublin, might head to the Nation Archives and spend the day in the reading rooms and hopefully find some help. I'm almost certain I've found Stephen's registration form for Dublin City Artilliary Militia from 1890 and would like to speak to somebody who might know more about these records and guide me to more information
