RC baptism Duneane Antrim Ireland
« on: Wednesday 05 October 22 23:07 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am finding this really difficult, and need at least Alice's surname to search for other interpretations of it. The snip is from https://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000633172#page/25/mode/1up
with filter 1840 Oct. Even the date in October is difficult and the first name of the second witness.
Also, the Oct. accords with the others near it, but it also looks like there are some "Oct"s further up.
Any help would be very greatly appreciated.

Looks like 12 October
Marget or Margot Scullin and James Murphy
Is the surname Caning ie Canning? Canay, Caveny.

I think it is probably a variation of Cavenny Kaveney etc
What names are you looking for?  What makes you think that this person is related to your search?

How about Canery and Scullin? Are those names common in that area? If you are not familiar with the area, look through a few pages of the register. Also look for how the writer wrote the other names with those letters in them.

Edit- On second thought, Caveny looks more like it.

Thanks a lot.
Since I posted I have actually found the Alice I was really looking for: Shivers. I've actually seen many variations of this, including e.g. Chivers, Chivvery, Shivvers, Shivvery, Shivvey and more, so was very open to almost anything.
I found a transcription of the one I posted as Canavy, but this surname didn't work in ifhf. I needed a surname to try to put into ifhf to find what their transcription was, as without a surname in the search nothing can be done. I had tried lots of things with no success and will try the ones you said now, to satisfy my curiosity about what they think it is.
Thanks again. ....
I did try it, but with no success. Perhaps they just haven't transcribed it.

It looks a little like Carany to me. Modern version of that would be Kearney. I live in Duneane and there are some Kearney families in the area today. The witness is Margt Scullin. Scullin/Scullion is a very common name in this area. The adjacent parish is Ballyscullion.
