The electoral rolls for 1894-94 shows Mary Ann PATTERSON and James PATTERSON at Tai Tapu, Ellesmere. In 1896-97, Mary Ann is still there but not James.

There is a possible death for James Patterson 18 Feb 1897 (husband of Mary A Patterson) Ashburton Cemetery.

This may be the marriage of Mary Ann Maginnis and James Paterson.
1870/7959   Mary Ann   Maginnis   James   Paterson

If you have not already obtained this certificate it would be worthwhile to do so.

It is always best to get a copy of the original certificate.
When/if you have this certificate already could you let us have all the details as this may help us find the family of Mary Ann Maginnis (etc) in Ireland

A printout is cheaper than a certificate. It can also be e-mailed to you.  :)

Hi lnr

Sorry, I have to disagree with this earlier information.

:)   Please remember that a NZ marriage record of this era, 1870, only has very limited information ( - see attached NZ BDM link.) and so it will be of no assistance in finding, e.g. "family in Ireland".

https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/datacollected/marriage
[also, just a couple of reminders >
*   a "printout of a marriage record" will give you maximum available information ... including  the names of the witnesses (they are usually missed off from a "certificate" - which is a transcription of the record).
*   It is not until the last quarter of 1880 (from October 1880), that NZ marriage records begin to add addtional information such as "parental details", "places of birth  for bride/groom"  - as passed by law earlier in that year. ]

P. S.   :   Will add a link in following post which may enable you to get some details for this 1870 marriage.

Hi lnr

You may already be familiar with this ??   [Canterbury :  Church Register Transcriptions of Baptismal, Burial and Marriage records.    At Christchurch Central Library.  ]

https://christchurch.bibliocommons.com/v2/record/S37C323259

You can use one of the options listed in below link, to request a look-up for the 1870  PATERSON - MAGINNIS marriage transcription.   No guarantee they have it,  but, it seems possible the couple may have married in the Canterbury area.

Possible children:

1876/9077   Paterson   NR   Mary Ann   James   -

1875/3711   Paterson   Elizabeth Ann   Mary Ann   James   -

1880/11208   Paterson   Mary Margaret**   Mary Ann   James

1883/3682   Paterson   Susan Christina++   Mary Ann   James

 Joseph (1886/16430) died 10 months (1887/4114) and
Rachel (1889/14151)  died 3 years (1892/5215)

These children are in the same grave as the James PATTERSON found by Neale in reply#9

There are quite a few more PATTERSON children on the BDM index with parents James and Mary Ann. (Can't see a marriage for a James PATTERSON (2 "T's) and a Mary Ann, however they may not have married in NZ.

1886  Joseph
1888  William John
1889  Rachel
1892  Albert Lundy
1894  Maggie Christina
1895  James Alexander

Modified to add:
1897  Joseph Stanley

A tree on Ancestry has this couple as James PATTERSON and Mary Ann LUNDY married 8 June 1879 in Shanco, Ireland, though no source is quoted. So possibly not your James PATERSON.

Modified to add:
There is a James PATTERSON married Mary Ann LUNDY registered at Carrickmacross, Ireland (2/395) in Jun qtr 1879.
