Mary Robertson from Banffshire
« on: Friday 07 October 22 13:44 BST (UK) »
I am looking for my great-grandmother Mary Robertson.    She was born in December 1842, in Forgue, Banffshire.  Baptism was January 1843.  Parents (according to the baptism record) are Alexander Robertson and Eliza Webster (both unmarried).  Witnesses were Alexander Robertson (son) and James Robertson.   I suspect the mother may have been a domestic servant.  From 1872ish she was living in Kendall, Westmorland, married to William Leighton.   I can neither find any record of her life between these dates, nor of her marriage.
Presumably she came south on the trains?
Can anyone help with tracing Mary?

Welcome to Rootschat

Did her mother marry?  She may be under her mothers married name & may have married under that surname

Are you looking at the 1881 census where William is a shoemaker?
The chldren in that household have MMN Collier, though it seems to be the same woman, born in Banffshire in 1843.

My great great grandmother was definitely Mary Robertson, not Collier.  Her mother may have got married later,  but I have no details.
William Leighton, her husband was a shoemaker,  and my great grandmother was her daughter Agnes.
There are a couple of marriages recorded for William Leighton, but I am not sure that either are my immediate family.  There were a lot of Leightons in Westmorland at that time.
Please tell me where you are seeing entries for Mothers Maiden Name, as this isn't  recorded on the census.

That is the family being discussed, GR2.

I think mother Jessie's maiden name is likely THOM rather than Thorne.
