Place name in Ireland
« on: Friday 07 October 22 20:02 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to decipher the birth place for an ancestor from the 1861 census.

I can make out what I think is Armagh and Ireland but there is another place name written that I am struggling with!  It doesn't help that there is a strike mark through the word!  Still, any help would be most appreciated.

Thank you

Michelle

You could also look at lists of townlands - any or all of the following might help:

Thanks for your replies - I have already taken a look at various databases - at first glance i think it looks like Chiminley or Criminley but no such place apparently exists; at least, not in Armargh  ;D. I've tried to find corresponding church records for baptisms too - Would you say that the county is definitely Armagh? and Ireland?  More confusing is the fact that in the 1891 census it looks as though Scotland has been listed as her place of birth!

Thank you

Michelle

1871 definitely says Scotland - her maiden name was Riley.  1 don't know whether you have already discovered that Amelia b 1870 per 1871 census was registered as Pamela

1881 birthplace could be Wigtown Scotland

Here's the marriage

1891 definitely Scotland

If it is Armagh, I don’t think it begins with ‘C’. I did at first but it has the lower curve of the ‘C’ above it which is deceiving.

I think it begins with ‘D’. It could be Dromintee/Drumintee, allowing for pronunciation and spelling errors.  :-\

1881 is Ireland but then ‘Wigtown’  :-\

Armagh is written as Aramagh in the snippet posted.

Thanks Carole; yes, I had found the marriage record - and I am going to assume that she was born in Scotland for the time being ..... although I've looked on Scotlands People and nothing is popping up in Church Records for baptisms...I've also done a quick check on Irish genealogy.ie for any James Riley who had a daughter called Elizabeth in the Armagh section - none of them are shoemakers and nothing fits the bill yet lol x
