Hill family sanity check please - East End/London
« on: Tuesday 11 October 22 09:11 BST (UK) »
Been working on this branch for a while now but keep going round in circles and could do with some fresh eyes.

My 3 x G.G grandmother was Ann Hill, who was born around 1829 in Whitechapel. On her marriage record in 1859 (to Henry Weaver), it is noted that she is 30 years of age and that her father was Eliphalet Hill. I have also found them in Flower & Dean Street on 1841 census with the mothers given name as Mary.

On the limited records that I can find for the father, his name is never spelled consistently, which makes it a pest to look for.

I am wondering if anyone else can find anything on Eliphalet or Mary? I am completely stuck on them and can't get any further back really. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

As a side note, I have many DNA matches that seem to suggest that Mary's family may have been American (to the name Mary Hill Bowling - Then back to the names Jacobs & Crawford), but this is completely anecdotal and not proven.

Baptism - 15 December 1805 - St Mary, Whitechapel (image on Ancestry)

Eliphalet, son of John and Susanna Hill of New Castle Street.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thank, you. I can see that now. Will add to the tree and look for records on John and Susannah. Could be fun with such a generic set of names  ;)

Thanks so much for the look up. I think that this could be a good lead, will take a look in to it and let you know what I find.

My eyes appear to be playing tricks on me (maybe). There seems to be a Susannah Savery/savoury who marries a Solomon Hill and then another one who is married to a John Hill? Might need to unpick this one for a bit!

The mind boggles! This is what I have found

14th May 1777 - Baptism of Susannah Savery - Parents William & Mary

6th April 1798 Marriage between Susannah Savery & John Hill at St Matthews Bethnal Green

1841 Census Susannah & John Hill (birth abt 1776) living in Nova Scotia Gardens

1841 Census Susannah and Soloman Hill - Silk Weavers Living in Pelham St (I think)

1851 Census Susannah & Soloman Hill (birth abt 1777) Silk Weavers Almhouses.

There are 60+ trees on ancestry that have Susannah Savery married to Soloman 'John' Hill but I don't believe that this can be correct as the records that are available do not show Solomon anywhere and just John. Furthermore, the census records backs up that these are separate people.

It looks to me as if 60+ people on Ancestry have their facts wrong on this one and that all the hints that I am going to get on this will also be wrong as a result! Fun times  :o

You can turn off member tree hints if you want to.
From drop down menu on pedigree view, click tree settings,
under hint preferences click site preferences, click trees,
scroll down to hint notifications and turn off member tree hints.
You will still get all other hints as usual.
