Flushed with the great success of my previous question about John Bollyng fuller of Canterbury in 1432 has emboldened me to ask another question about a John Bullyng (this one is a Chandler of Canterbury) some 10 years later in 1442.

I suspect that with the limited text there's very limited amount of information supplied other than this is some kind of trade debt? Can anyone find any extra information in the following Latin documents that might be useful?

It's a standard plea of debt. There is hardly any more than is given in the index entries.

Taking the two together, Bullyng is claiming (through his attorney) that Bery and Lynde each owe him six marks, but they haven’t turned up in court and they can’t be found. The sheriff is ordered to bring them in within eight days of the Feast of the Purification (2 Feb). Again, they don’t turn up on the appointed day, and he is ordered to arrest them and have them in court within 15 days of Easter.

One again my heartfelt thanks. It's great to have a real expert giving access to these ancient documents by translation to people such as myself who are enthusiastic amateurs.

It's been wonderful building up a picture of the Bollyng family in Canterbury and environs. This John Bullyng the chandler had a daughter, Joan, compared to the Wife of Bath as she had a series of four marriages to some very highly placed people, Thomas Levyn mercer in 1464, then John Fremyngham one time mayor and MP, John Chute, yeoman of the Crown, and finally John Swann who died 1498

I wonder if the following - some two years later - completes more of the story? No mention of Wm Bery this time. Or was John Bullyng persuing the same debt of 2 years previously?

This is a different case. John Bullyng of Canterbury, chandler, is the plaintiff, against William Lynde of Wyngham, husbandman, who is allegedly in debt to Bullyng. The case is postponed for a shortage of jurors, and the sheriff is instructed to appoint another six within three weeks of Easter.

Why thank you yet again. I could see this item didn't say an awful lot but not knowing was just so tantilising...

Your help has really revitalised my interest in Canterbury of this period.

I must ask do you do this professionally? I notice that Vance Mead has also helped on this website which, even had I been able to read the document, I would never have understood about Roo & Doo

I have no connection to AALT. It is Vance who is the expert on the legal documents digitised there.
