Mabel Andrews
« on: Tuesday 18 October 22 12:38 BST (UK) »
I am seeking information on Mabel Andrews born 1890.
The only info I have is the 1891 census showing her as daughter of Charles Andrews and Charlotte ( in fact her name was Rachel Charlotte Amelia) born in Aldershot.
In fact this is not true as her older & younger were born in Portsmout

BMD shows a Mabel Mary J Andrews born in Alverstoke but I am suspicious of that as they were of poor means and Alverstoke is  the other side of Gosport.
Appreciate any assistance David

What was her mother's maiden name? You can check for births showing mother's maiden name on GRO site. It's possible she was registered with a different Christian name or even without a first name being chosen.

Here's the birth for Mabel Mary Jane Andrews in 1890- mother's maiden name Selway-

( in fact her name was Rachel Charlotte Amelia) born in Aldershot.

She is Rachel Charlotte Lavinia in 1911.

1901 she is niece to Harry Holdship in Portsmouth and same address 1911

Sarah HOLDSHIP was formerly SPRIGGS, her father was John SPRIGGS, a soldier, and her mother Sarah Ann BIGGS.

Mother Sarah Ann married secondly to James HUMM in 1861 (indexed I think as HUNNER).

I can see regular birth registrations for the HUMM/BIGGS children, and when Rachel was born James must have been in the army.

HUMM, Rachell Charlotte Lavinia

Debra,Brilliant! I have lots of notes on Rachael. She never married Charles. She is my great grandmother. She went under several names in her life particularly after the death of Charles, he died young (33). She is buried in Kingston Cemetery Portsmouth.
One of the places I must visit . Problem is most of it is grassed over with no markers.
The Cemetery service can give location but no markers along the paths to state if its row 'x' or file 'x'!! My grandparents are there but never found them.David
