Thomas Turner (Cutler)
« on: Sunday 23 October 22 17:27 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm trying to trace a Thomas Turner and Margaret Chisholm. They are listed as parents of John Turner(Filemaker), who died in Hutchesontown, Gorbals, in 1869(age 46). Death Certificate says place of birth, Edinburgh, Midlothian. I can't find his marriage or birth certificate, or any more details on parents Thomas or Margaret. Any help would be appreciated 👍

Hi Turner191262

Scottish death certs do not include birth places with the exception of 1855 registrations.

What else do you have on John? Did he marry? Do you have him in earlier censuses before his death?

Do John's parents show as deceased on his death registration?

Lots of questions  ;)

On family Search John Turner 1822?

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:68KF-JNWD

However 3 baptisms on Scotland’s People for a John Turner in Edinburgh but different parents, so not sure if connected.

No marriage in the British Isles for Thomas & Margaret 1800 - 1825 that I can see?

Hi All, yes John and Margaret Turner in Brown Street in 1851 census is him. Cutler is profession of Thomas Turner(I thought that it said cutter🤔). I am aware of Thomas Turner of Sheffield famous cutlery makers. If only I could find a connection. I've tried all the permutations to find Thomas Turner and Margaret Chisholm, and no trace of John Turner's marriage or birth certificate or baptism. Your help is much appreciated.

Like you Colin, I struggled to find anything on parents  :-\

Always worth bearing in mind that mistakes can creep in by the informant to a death reg. Errors made on parents' names are not uncommon unfortunately.

What was the maiden name of John Turner's wife, Margaret? Trying to see whether there were any further clues from the names they chose for their children.

Hi Monica,
Thanks for your help. John's wife's maiden name was Livingston, hence her son Livingston Turner. The only death that I can see on Scotland's People of a Turner with Mother's maiden name Chisholm is my John Turner.
Just to confuse matters, when I look for Turner deaths with the mother's maiden name, there are other Turners with the father marrying a Livingston!
Many Turner males married someone called Margaret, causing me many blind alleys. There are 3 Hugh Turners in my family tree, including my own dad(he passed away 2000). Possibly a miltary marrtiage/birth? If Thomas Turner WAS alive after his son John's death, it should be recorded somewhere....
