GRO Can't Find Indexed Marriage
« on: Tuesday 25 October 22 11:26 BST (UK) »
Hi All:
I recently ordered a Marriage Certificate from the GRO for Mary Hutchins/William Phillips, 1839, Q3, Penzance, Vol 9, P 257.  I double-checked the details given in the indexes both on An***y and FreeBMD.  The GRO have responded with:
"There is no trace of the above mentioned person at the reference you quoted."
Has anyone else had this happen?  If so, were you able to discover whether the indices are incorrect or did asking for a second search provide the marriage details in the end?
I'm not sure how to proceed!  Any advice, please?

There are four people on the marriage register page.  Mary HUTCHINS married Nicholas TRUDGEN (TENGER in the indexes).

Marriages Sep 1839

HUTCHINS    Mary        Penzance    9   257
LEAN    Mary         Redruth    9   257
PHILLIPS    William         Penzance    9   257
TENGER    Nicholas         Penzance    9   257

Mary LEAN should not be in that group, she married Daniel BLAMEY in Redruth and 257 should be 275.  She is already indexed again correctly.

Thank you both so much  :).  If only the GRO had explained  ::).  Now I know I need to search elsewhere for my Hutchins/Phillips marriage!

William and Dinah are page 246, volume 9 so he is not the William that appears on that page.  It all looks like a bit of a mess to me.

I'd suggest you try Cornwall OPC, which will give you a transcript and you could see who married who (as long as it was not a register office marriage).

https://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/home/

If you can confirm the marriage you are looking for was in an Anglican church then see what the county archives would charge for a scan of the register entry. That will give you exactly what an official civil cert would with the added bonus of original signatures (if they were able to sign).
The county archives I use charge a lot less than a GRO cert.

Its definitely an error in the GRO index

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:2:77T6-JG7?i=4&cc=1769414&cat=1921239

(you need to be signed in to see that image, an account is free and its simple to sign up)

That is the image of the Parish Register page and the other couple on that page married in October so would be indexed by the GRO as Q4 1839.

Because of wear it's is not unusual for there to be errors in the index, especially when an early hand written index has had to be transcribed more than once.

When ordering marriage certificates, I only ever quote one of the couple, the person who I know most about.  I usually know the father of one of them, so can tell if it the correct certificate I receive.

That way it usually eliminates the chance of the order being rejected.

Good advice and would have resulted in a cert being sent out, but I get the impression that this order may have been tried as the OP was looking for any marriage with that particular surname combination.

As a rule, but especially in these circumstances, I'd advise searching the relevant OPC site (if it exists)/ Free Reg/ Family Search etc. etc to see if a parish record or transcript can be found for the individual names on the GRO index entry.
May take a little time, but could save £11 for a record that isn't what you are looking for.

Though that is just my individual preference, my budget is fairly tight, my time is freely available :-)
