Birth records Patrick Leahy & Ellen Walsh
« on: Thursday 27 October 22 16:44 BST (UK) »
Hi All
I'm new to this site. I have been trying to trace my ancestors for a while now and hit a brick wall.
Briefly, my great grandfather Charles Thomson Hunter was born in Brazil in 1876. This has been confirmed by an organisation there. Unfortunately, there is no actual certificate. They also confirmed his parents were James Thomas Hunter & Maria Alexandrina Walsh Leahy Hunter - no records available.
No one in the family knows why he was born in Brazil. He died when my grandmother was only 10 years old. He was the only one of his family to emigrate to England, in 1893. Where he stayed until his death in 1924.
From my research, I have found that Maria's parents were Patrick Leahy & Ellen Walsh

I MAY have found their marriage record in Ballyhea, Co Cork

I have checked many genealogy sites and passenger lists. I have even written a letter to a church in Brazil but had no reply. I've tried Cyndislist, John Gresham, Tithes.

I don't know where else to look. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hi Carol, and a warm welcome to Rootschat!

You might want to take a look around Familysearch.  It is a free site, but you do have to register an email address with them.  https://www.familysearch.org/en/

I am wondering if this could be a sibling of Charles?

Welcome to RootsChat from me too.

For interest, there is an item in 1880 about a court case  -"The Attorney General of Honduras v Hunter" which mentions Charles Thomson HUNTER as the respondent. He owns some land in British Honduras which the Supreme Court of Honduras wants to recover.
Thursday,  Nov. 18, 1880
Publication: The Standard

A coincidence of names?

Happy to send you the article if you haven't seen it.

Modified to add:
After looking a bit more, it probably is just a coincidence of names. I had no idea there are so many Charles Thomson HUNTERs!

I'm sure you've researched this already but I'm always happy to learn something new. Didn't know that there were Irish/Brazil links.

"During the Cisplatine War [1820s], Brazil sent recruiters to Ireland to recruit men as soldiers for the war against Argentina. Any Irish that signed up for the Brazilian army were promised that if they enlisted they would be given a grant of land after five years of service. Approximately 2,400 men were recruited and when they arrived in Brazil (many with their families), they were completely neglected by the government. The Irish mutinied together with a German regiment, and for a few days there was open warfare on the streets of Rio de Janeiro. While most were ultimately sent home or re-emigrated to Canada or Argentina, some did stay and were sent to form a colony in the province of Bahia."

Another possible reason for Irish emigrants to Brazil is mining. There were gold mines in both countries. Family lore is that an uncle (or great-uncle) of my Irish grandma was a miner in S. America.
