Seeking Sarah Lomas and her daughter Florence
« on: Monday 31 October 22 18:03 GMT (UK) »
Sarah Lomas was born in Beauchief (in the Ecclesall Bierlow RD -- now in Sheffield, then in Derbyshire) in 1847, and bapt at Beauchief Abbey in June 1847. I have her living in Beauchief with her family in 1851, 61 and 71.

Florence Gertrude Lomas was baptised in Beauchief Abbey on Dec 31 1876; daughter of Sarah, no father's name given and no abode given either. FreeBMD suggests that she was actually born in 1871.

I can't find Sarah or Florence at any point after this. I wonder if Sarah may have lived with someone and taken their name without marrying, and brought Florence up with a different surname (not Lomas).

Can anyone spot anything please?

I can't find anything either but wondered if there was any significance in a baptism 5 years after the birth?

Have you seen the original baptism image and does it indicate an age?

I looked at the baptism records on familysearch (no images, only index). On the same day as Florence Gertrude was baptised there was a Ernest Gill, son of Samuel and Sarah, baptised. This may well be the boy registered in March quarter of 1876 with mother's name Lomas; there seems to be a marriage in 1874 (https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl ) that matches.  The week before they'd had an Edith Mary Gill also baptised - she was born in 1874.

Sadly, both of the Gill children seem to have died around the same period, Edith Mary in late 1876 and Ernest in early 1877.  It is possible that Sarah also died - there is a woman aged 30 by the name of Sarah Gill who died in 1877.  The illness of the younger children might have spurred a family otherwise a bit lax with baptisms to head to church.

If these records line up (and I would suggest at least the 1874 marriage record to doublecheck), then in 1877 she was most likely either back in the hands of her mother's family (perhaps took the name of an uncle who married one of her mother's sisters), or went into care.

Today, jorose said

Find My Past have images of the baptism, it does not state the age of Florence Gertrude. Entry reads:

'1876, Dec 31, Florence Gertrude, mother Sarah'

No mention of a father or place of residence.

Following on from the Samuel Gill information there is this family in 1881 to check out

Saml Gill 27
Lydia Gill 28
Gertrude Gill 5 born Sheffield
Frederick Gill 3
Maurice Gill 2

Might be a red herring but Gertrude 5 would fit a baptism 1876

Hmm marriage Dec 1874 Sheffield has a Samuel Gill and Lydia Pallett as a possible pairing.

Will check births for the children in case this Gertrude can be ruled out.......yes birth for Gertrude Gill mothers name Pallett registered Sep 1875 so ignore that family sorry.
