« on: Friday 04 November 22 20:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi hope someone can help! I'm doing my family tree and have got stuck on my great great grandma Grace Bradley. I found her on 1901 census with my great grandmother Mary Francis Bradley, living in Liverpool. No father on birth certificate. She was born in Calton NB no idea what NB means in 1877 Mary Francis in 1901. Can't find either of them after 1901 and need some guidance please!!

Hi there and welcome to Rootschat!

You mention Grace is your great-great-grandma so presumably you do know more about what happened to Mary Francis later in life, or you know about a sibling to Mary Francis, or some other data that leads you to the conclusion that this Grace is your gggrandma. Can you share that info with us?

On the birth certificate, what exactly is the address of birth? (This may be a reference to a workhouse or other institution)

Who registered the birth? What was their address?

Do the addresses at birth line up with the address at census?

Who else (or what else, if a workhouse or hospital) is associated with these addresses?

You must be able to find Mary Frances BRADLEY after 1901 to know that she is your great grandmother.

Do you have a marriage certificate for Mary Frances BRADLEY?

Mary Francis BRADLEY married Henry SMALLEY 4 Sep 1920 at All Souls Bolton (no father's name), though she says her age is 21. Henry and Mary Francis SMALLEY are on the 1939 at Bolton. Mary's date of birth (18 March 1901) is the same as her baptism at St Farancis Xavier's Liverpool (mother Grace).

Modified to add for clarity:
Baptism register has Maria Francisca BRADLEY, birth date 18 Mar 1901, baptised 1 May 1901. Mother Gratiae BRADLEY.

Marriage cert has Mary's address 10 Myrrh St (Henry, 25, operative cotton spinner, 45 Beech St, father - James, operative cotton spinner). Witnesses - Ernest CASHELL and Pollie MALLEY.

She was born in Calton NB no idea what NB means ......

NB = North Britain = Scotland

So I would read this as Calton in Glasgow, Scotland

Here is a possible birth ......
Grace Broadley (Bradley)
born 16 Feb 1871,  Calton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Father:   James Broadley
Mother:   Grace McGourlick

The census shows the parents were born in Ireland.

In the 1891 census for Dollar Clackmannanshire,
Grace Bradley is recorded as a domestic servant / laundry maid, Born Glasgow, age 20
She is working for James McArthur MOIR

Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

Thank you all for the replies. For those that asked the next time I found Mary Francis Bradley was in the 1921 census boarding with her husband Henry Smalley in  a house in Bolton with a family. I can't find her in the 1911 census or her mum Grace either. Don't know much about these 2 and neither do my family only that Mary and Henry emigrated to Australia in the 60's and she died in 1974.

"boarding with her husband Henry Smalley in  a house in Bolton with a family."

What family?.   Who are they living with?
