Munro/Reid
« on: Friday 04 November 22 21:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi I'm hoping someone can help me I've been searching for what feels like forever and not making any discoveries.

I'm trying to find some information on John Munro married (I think) to Mary Alexander.

The information I have so far is :

They had a son named Alexander Munro in 1880 who married Helen Reid (born circa 1877) on July 18th 1903 at the Parish of Rothiemay. On the marriage certificate John and Mary are both deceased and Mary is listed only as Mary Alexander, not Munro (I'm unsure if this means they were not married or it was written like this because she was deceased).

John and Helen had a child John 'Jock' Munro in August 1905 in Huntly who married Mary Ann Tough Dower (Born November 29 1909) who then settled in Aberdeen.

I cannot find any birth, death or marriage certificates for John and Mary. Any help or tips would be much appreicated - John would be my great-great-great Grandfather.

So I would start with Alexander Munro in the census records before his marriage and try to track his birth down.
Perhaps his parents were not married or they died when he was little and he was shaky on the details.
Any clues on his marriage certificate e.g. were there witnesses who might be from the Munro or Alexander families?

If his parents were married, it would have said "Mary Munro M.S. Alexander".

1881 at Lower Ashalloch croft, Forgue:

Alexander Alexander, 53, crofter of 12 acres, b. Inverkeithny
Eliza Alexander, 42, crofter's wife, b. Huntly
Alexander Munro, Daughter's son, 1, b. Ythan Wells

1891 at Howe of Ashalloch, Forgue:

Alexander Alexander, 60, crofter
Elizabeth Alexander, 51, crofter's wife
Alexander Munro, grandson, 11, scholar, b. Forgue

There is a birth registered in 1880 at Ythan Wells for an Alexander Munro, which is also indexed as Alexander Alexander, so both (unmarried) parents must have signed the register.

The quoad sacra parish of Ythan Wells was formed from part of Forgue parish and part of Auchterless parish.

You would need to get more information about the father John MUNRO from Alexander’s birth certificate, but this might be him with family in 1871.

The Munro family in 1861

In 1881 this same John Munro, age 22, was working as a tailor in Forgue (where the Alexander family was living), and lodging with the HENDRY family in George Street.

If this is the right John Munro, then his birth was 3 Sep 1858 in Forgue.
Parents: Charles MUNRO and Bathia RHIND

In 1882 John married Barbara Ross HENDRY / HENRY
In 1891 and 1901  John MUNRO and wife Barbara were living in Aberdeen working as a Tailor coat maker.

Many many thanks for the responses - very much appreciated. I shall begin looking at this again from the new details you have given me and see how it all adds up and make sense of everything in my brain.

Thanks for the warm welcome. You've given me my excitement back to continue this after hitting what felt like a brick wall  :) :)
