1851 census. Does this really say 'lazy'
« on: Thursday 10 November 22 09:27 GMT (UK) »
This made me laugh but perhaps I'm reading it incorrectly.  'Lazy' in the blind/deaf column for Joseph Bannister.  His birthplace is Staffordshire, Marchington, which doesn't seem to spill over into the last column, unlike his wife's birthplace, Derbyshire, Lullington and his daughter's, Staffordshire, Tutbury.  Or perhaps Marchington does spill over and the 'y' is just an ink dribble.

Also what is Mary his daughter's occupation please?  The second word is maker but what is the first word? Shift?

Thanks for looking.

The "y" is the enumerator's tick -- the same as a couple of lines down. It is not the same as the definite "y" in Tutbury

Can't work out what his birthplace is -- possibly .... Manchester Lancs?
Wainwright - Yorkshire
Whitney - Herefordshire
Watson -  Northamptonshire
Trant - Yorkshire
Helps - all
Needham - Derbyshire
Waterhouse - Derbyshire
Northing - all

The image is much clearer at findmypast, and to me it very much looks like Marchington is spilling over into the next column. The daughter’s occupation is Dress Maker with a long s in Dress.

I agree with Shaun, definitely just Staffordshire Marchington (not lazy  :D )

And whilst it is difficult to read, the daughter's occupation ends in "ess maker" so I would guess "dress maker" too.

Yes I have his records and he was born in Marchington, Staffs.

I so wanted it to say lazy.

Thanks ShaunJ, MaddyS and Alan - I had wondered what Mary Ann Bannister's occupation was on marriage but I can only see a transcript that doesn't include occupations.  She married on 6 Sep 1852 at St Mary, Tutbury, Staffs to William Cranage/Crannage.

I hadn't realised that FindMyPast images would be any different, so will check there too next time I can't read something.

Thanks ShaunJ.  As she married only a year after the census it's to be expected that she had the same occupation.  It's the males whose occupation seems to vary a lot, although I think some bigged themselves up for the marriage cert.

Shame it wasn't "lazy".  ;D
There are quite a few threads on here about amusing census entries, especially what was written as "infirmities". This is one of my favourites:
