John Rigby birthplace
« on: Friday 11 November 22 18:56 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find the birthplace and parents of John Rigby (c1805-1865).  He married Hannah Law in 1824 in Barnsley, Yorkshire and Census records show his birthplace:
1841 - aged 35 born Yorkshire (with wife Hannah 35 and children Margaret 13,  Sarah 9, James 7 and John 3)
1851 John 47 born 1804 Barnsley, Yorkshire
1861  John 59 born 1802  Scowes Lancashire
It is the 1861 place of birth that differs from the other 2 censuses and I'm not sure why.
Any help to find a record of his birthplace and his parents would be much appreciated.  Thanks

I have an ancestor whose birthplace was either 'Repton, Derbyshire' or 'Skellingthorpe, Lincolnshire' on the various censuses.

As it turns out, he was born in Repton, but raised in Skellingthorpe, so I guess he felt he could give either.

I wonder whether it is the same for John? Perhaps he was born in Scowes and raised in Barnsley?

On the topic of Scowes, I couldn't figure out where this actually is until I stumbled on a website that described Scholes in Wigan as "Scowes."

Unfortunately, between 1800 and 1809, there were quite a few John Rigbys born in Wigan.

Thanks for this.   If Scholes is indeed the same as Scowes then that narrows it down - just a bit!

Hmm...

I see that, in 1841, John and his family are living in Silkstone, Yorkshire and his profession is 'weaver.'

In 1813, a Joseph Rigby of Silverstone, Yorkshire, linen weaver, married a Sarah Grimes or Graham in Barnsley. A relative, perhaps?

Also, did John baptise any of his children? I cannot find any baptisms for them.

That's unusual.  Maybe, non-conformist?
