What was William Johnson's occupation?
« on: Sunday 13 November 22 18:46 GMT (UK) »
This is a wedding in July 1891 in Notts.  I have not found any later census records of them together.
In the 1891 census William is a bricklayer's labourer. Thanks in advance.

Looks like "Mason Server" which I guess is another way of saying Brickmason's Labourer?

The OED would agree with that - one of its definitions of server is a labourer who assists someone like a bricklayer, especially by passing materials to them while they are working. One of its examples is a "bricklayer's server", taken from the Derby Mercury in 1889, so close in time and place to this marriage. The OED also says that this usage is now rare.

I was slow to interpret the first capital letter, but I agree with "Mason Server".

This leads me to ask a few questions, such as did he fetch and carry for a bricklayer = a hod carrier? Was he the chap who mixed cement for the bricklayer?

Or was his workplace a stone quarry and did he serve/look after an expert stone mason who measured and cut stones ?

That’s what I saw, but doubted myself until I saw later replies, just shows you learn something new every day.

Thanks everyone I had never heard of 'Server' used in that context, but it seems logical.

The same residence - Swan Street - is given for both at time of the marriage.

What address was William at in the 1891 census you have for him?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

I can't find them afterwards either  :-\

There was no father shown for her on the marriage but perhaps her mother married someone called Coggin?

Bit of a mystery couple you have there.
