Two strange baptism entries France 1713
« on: Tuesday 15 November 22 07:17 GMT (UK) »
Whilst looking through the Ciply, near Mons, registers, I came across these two entries, one straight after the other.

It would seem two children were found on the roadside - two different children, and then baptised.
I would be grateful for a transcription and translation - I have only got so far with them.
They caught my eye as Margareta Beauvoir, who witnesses(?) the second one, was one of my ancestors.
Nouvelles and Mesvin are little places just outside of Ciply.
The witnesses in the first one come from families whose names appear a lot in the registers - the Lion family, and the Gerin family.

Thanks for any insights.

I don't know any Latin, but it looks like Françoise Joseph (aged 4-5 months) was found on the 7th of October in front of a lamp near the mill on the Montemp road.

Charles Toussaint was found in a ditch near the main bridge?

My suggestion ...

Die 28 octobris 1713 sub dubio baptizata
est Francisca Joseph infans 4 aut 5 men-
sium, exposita 7 octobris ante sacellulum
vicinum molendinis in via Montensi.
Suscepit petrus Lion et Maria Magdalena
Gerin

On 28 October 1713 was conditionally baptised Françoise Joseph, a child 4 or 5 months old, abandoned on 7 October in front of the little shrine near the mill on the road to Mons. Godparents – Pierre Lion and Marie Madeleine Gerin

Die 5 novembris 1713 sub dubio baptizatus
est Carolus Toussaint infans 3 aut 4 sep-
timanarum expositus proper pontem Princi-
pis in Viridario (en une forrière*) dividen-
te territorium de Mesvin et territorium
de Nouvelles. Suscepit Margaret Beauvois

On 5 November 1713 was conditionally baptised Charles Toussaint, a child 3 or 4 weeks old, abandoned near the main bridge in a group of trees separating the jurisdictions of Mesvin and Nouvelles. Godparent – Margaret Beauvois

(ADDED the transcripts later, after noting you wanted both transcription and translation. The priest's Latin is rather poor.)

(ADDED 2 * - could be fossière (ditch), as suggested by manukarik)

Thanks Bookbox I couldn't make out dubio!

The second entry has a bit in French in brackets, which I thought was en une fossière - in a ditch?

Yes, I think you're right. I added it at the same time you were posting  :)

Many thanks Bookbox and manukarik.
How fascinating!
I expect this was not the first, or last, time this happened.
I wonder what happened to the children after this, and whether Margaret Beauvois had any more to do with the child. Not something we shall ever know I suspect.
