Family notices, 1970's newspapers and Claro Registration district?
« on: Monday 21 November 22 20:13 GMT (UK) »
I need to like to find out if there was a death notice/obituary for a person (they may be a close relative but I need more information).

Their death was registered 1974 in the Claro Registration District.
There is no corresponding probate record to give a clue as to where in Claro the person lived.
I don't have the death certificate - if I need to I will get it in the future, funds allowing.
The British Newspaper Archive does not seem to cover that period/area - please tell me if I'm wrong.

I'm not familiar with the Yorkshire districts. I looked up where Claro is, and was thinking if someones death was registered in the Claro area, and there was a death notice, it must have been in a Harrogate newspaper. I've been looking what archives and library is in Harrogate to try to see what 1970's newspapers they have that had family notices. I couldn't find anything on their website, so was going to email them...
But from what I've just read on Rootschat about Claro reg dist, it includes many different towns, that probably had their own newspapers?

Please can anyone tell me, were there any newspapers that had family notices/obituaries, that covered the entire Claro area?
For the period to cover 1974?

Do you know if/where there is public access to it?

I'm not at all local, so sadly I can't pop into all the libraries and trawl through everything they have to offer for that period. (If I need to visit it would need to be targeted to one location and short time period)

All info and suggestions welcome! Thank you.

These are all the areas in the Claro RD

With so little info you would probably be quicker buying a copy of the death cert.   Have you googled the name just in case anything comes up?

Although cremation was more prevalent in the 1970's - have you checked findagrave just in case they were buried?

Hi, thanks for replying.

I've seen the list of places, it seems quite a large area!
It's a very common name unfortunately.
I've checked Find A Grave.

There are a lot of places in the Claro registration district, but the only ones of any size are Harrogate, Ripon and Knaresborough, and to a lesser extent Pateley Bridge.

All of these come under North Yorkshire, and this page gives details of the newspapers in the various libraries around the county:

https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/libraries-local-collections

Depending on how prominent a person was, there might be death notices in the Yorkshire Post (published in Leeds), or other papers from Leeds or York. I've also come across people from other parts of Yorkshire who died in care homes or similar in Harrogate, so if it fits in with what you know about this person, you might need to extend the search to a 20-30 mile radius of Harrogate.

In case you need it, the local authority cemeteries office is at Stonefall Cemetery and Crematorium in Harrogate:

https://www.harrogate.gov.uk/directory-record/40/stonefall-cemetery-and-crematorium

EDIT:
Just adding to the above, you might find it helpful to look at Tony Cheal's listing of names from mainly Harrogate newspapers. He's able to provide more information for any of those listed. See

Another thought - Yorkshire Burials at https://yorkshireburials.uk/

There are some photos of memorials for the Harrogate district, and photos and transcriptions for a much bigger area. It's free to register and search, so may be worth a try, especially if the person had gone to a nursing home from elsewhere.

Two more that might be worth a try:

Gravestone Photos - https://www.gravestonephotos.com/

Deceased Online (basic search is free) - https://www.deceasedonline.com/

These sites are all works in progress, so you may or may not be lucky.
