Rebecca Mee/Ward
« on: Monday 21 November 22 22:05 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could help me try to find Rebecca Eliza Louisa Ward on the 1891 census. I have her on all the others, she was born in the year 1878 and lived in the London area all her life, born in Lambeth.
She may be down under ''Mee'' because both her parents died in the year 1881, when she was about 4. I'm not sure who looked after her after they died, but all her siblings' surnames reverted to ''Mee'' instead of ''Ward'' which makes me think someone with the surname ''Mee'' looked after them. Rebecca is the only child that would be on a census with her adoptive parents which would help me know who looked after the children after the parents died.
Rebecca's mum's previous husband was William Thomas Mee, which may be a coincidence but suggests someone connected to him took in the children. However William Mee died in 1875 so it couldn't have been the previous husband himself.
If anyone could find Rebecca or has any idea how to find out who took Rebecca and her siblings in, that would be great. Any help/advice appreciated
Thank you,  :)

I think I have found them now - in 1881 anyway.
Do you have her in later censuses?

Her siblings are:
Edward Alfred Ward 1865
Alexander Ward/Mee 1871
Herbert Frederick Ward/Mee 1873
Oliver Ward/Mee 1874

and then Robert, Frederick and William Ward who all died as young children.
(Edward kept Ward as he was old enough when his parents died to not live with whoever looked after the others I'm assuming)

Rebecca married Frederick Price
In 1901: Guinness Trust Buildings, 219 Snowfields, Bermondsey (under ''Rebecca L Price'')
In 1911: 13 Crosby Row Long Lane, Southwark (under ''Louisa Price'')

Hope this helps  :)

Thank you, that Alfred Mee information is very helpful!
Her Dad was called Alfred Ward, which is a bit confusing  ???
Maybe William Thomas Mee had a brother called Alfred Mee that looked after them

Rebecca Eliza Ward was a witness to the marriage of Edward Alfred Ward, widower and Elizabeth Jessie Burton in 1893, Lambeth.
He gives his father as Alfred Ward, Navvy.

Hm, that's interesting.
Would it be possible to find out the father each of the siblings gives for their marriage?
If it is, here are the marriages of the siblings:

Alexander Mee married Elizabeth A Davis in 1894 in Gravesend, Kent
Alexander Mee re-married to Hilda G A Heymer in 1917 in Yorkshire

Herbert Frederick Mee married Maud Tufnell in 1901 in London

Oliver Mee married Sarah J Barker in 1896 in Lambeth, London

Thanks,  :)

Herbert, Alexander, and Oliver Mee entered into the Norwood Schools in 1881
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS1Y-L3PB-7?i=576&cat=1390389

Record states that they were illegitimate, mother dead, father deserted.  An Aunt, Eliza Westwood, is listed - perhaps she only had room to take in Rebecca? Edward Alfred, at the age of 16 or so, probably went straight out to work.

I presume the aunt is the source of the information that gave their surname as Mee in this record; perhaps she had some Opinions about her brother in law.
