Thank you brigidmac  :)
I had Rebecca as the mum of Hannah but hadn't found her sister Eliza, so thanks.
Just need to find Eliza on the 1891 census and hope Rebecca is living with her and her family!
Edit: The criminal assault is interesting, would make sense aswell, thanks again.

Thank you heywood,
Wonder where ''Edward'' Mee came from  ???
Maybe the children themselves didn't know exactly who their father was.

Looks like all the children were biological children of Alfred WARD + Hannah Wadham while she was still legally MEE

The children might have been taken into care only knowing their father as Dad or Alfred

As they were in care under surname MEE
The younger ones could believe their father was Alfred MEE the eldest Edward  would choose to keep his birth fathers surname .

Oliver may just have assumed eldest brother was named after father .

can anyone find  Rebecca's baptism ?

Eliza is the married aunt who enrolled the boys at Norwood school
I didn't make notes but she was with her husband in 1881 + 1891 no children

Eliza and William Westwood are at 1891 389 /134

Address 1, Cross Street

Edward Alfred’s address on marriage in 1893 was 7, Cross Street. He is not there in 1891.

Thank you for the Eliza Westwood information, Rebecca's still a mystery then!
I'll have a look for Alfred Ward on censuses after 1881, wonder where he went if he didn't die.
Thanks for your help everyone :)

I think Alfred WARD was deceased before 1891
The husband listed as  deserted on.childrend workhouse entrance was probably referring to William MEE

Alfred WARD was around for over a decade from children's births + baptisms in1873 to 1881.

Do you think Alfred Ward in 1891 could be this Alfred Ward?
Charlton Street, St Pancras, London
Alfred Ward      head          1827
Amelia Ward      wife          1838
Arthur Charlton   stepson     1871

Amelia was a widow in the previous census, which would fit in if Alfred and Amelia married/met inbetween 1881 and 1891. The only thing is that Alfred's occupation is a ''pianoforte maker'' and his occupation in 1881 is a Navigator

Edit: Sorry, I thought it meant Alfred deserted them, but William Mee makes more sense, thanks.

I think that Alfred is Alfred H Ward at 1881 217/133/74
He is a widower with children.

The various marriage records we found for the children have their father as a Navvy and Labourer, I think which fits with your Alfred in 1881.

I have Alfred Ward in 1881 living with Hannah and their children at 8 Sidwell Place in Lambeth, before she died  ???

edit: just wondering if anyone has come across a death record for Alfred Ward, I can't seem to find one in 1881-1891. Thanks.
