Looks like the place name should be Whanganui formerly known as Wanganui.

for hardsocks  ...

The following is the obituary for "MRS R. D. CAMPBELL of Fordell, near Wanganui"  [otherwise Jane CAMPBELL, wife of Robert CAMPBELL]

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/FS18980816.2.6

... it's helpful in that it gives a good deal more information than the short obit that was available for Robert CAMPBELL (see previous ... reply  # 4).

   ~  Lu

Added :    In the earlier info provided by Whenu, Robert CAMPBELL is referred to as
"Robert Dawson CAMPBELL" ... and, in the newspaper articles there is reference to "Mr and Mrs R.D. CAMPBELL snr. (senior) of Fordell" (which suggests there is an R.D. CAMPBELL junior ??  ).  I can't see a child  "R. D. CAMPBELL" on that family list though ??
Robert CAMPBELL when he died in 1908 is listed only as that,  (no mention of second name "Dawson" ?? ) :

Further added:   Don't know if this is Robert Dawson CAMPBELL senior  ??

Robert CAMPBELL

In the Obituary for his wife Jane, (refer Reply # 6 ), Robert CAMPBELL (along with his family) is said to have arrived in New Zealand in 1847 with a detachment of the 65th Regiment.

Someone else here may be able to help with further details of Robert CAMPBELL's time with the 65th ?   ;)

Meantime, here is an article on the regiments' earlier history and its movements in New Zealand.
