Military Accounts Department?
MAD seems to be used for lots of different things but was listed in

http://www.thelincolnshireregiment.org/abbreviations.shtml#M

https://cdn.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documents/records/abbreviations-in-world-war-one-medal-index-cards-unit.pdf page 34

as Military Accounts Department

Thanks for posting update ALAMO2008. That's interesting as I had assumed it would be Missing Presumed Dead. You live and learn!

Good afternoon,

Although the two links say it stands for Military Accounts Department I don't believe it is in this case.

I would go with ShaunJ and say Missing Assumed Dead. The simple reason being that all the other entries on that page have the abbreviations for Killed in Action, Died of Wounds, Died and 5 MADs. That suggests to me that they would all be entries due to enemy action.
