Joseph was Band Master with 1/8 the King's Regt.
He was band master of the garrison band in 1898 when his wife died in India. This was his second wife, who he had married in India in Madras in 1882. (Wife no. 1 was Mary)

His son Charles was born in India in 1869
His daughter Clara was born in India in 1872 and she married in India in 1896.

Records on FamilySearch

It is likely he travelled with his military unit.

According to Wikipedia: The 1st Battalion (Kings 8th) was brought back to Britain from India in 1860. It spent the year 1865 in Dublin, Ireland, where the battalion supported garrison operations against Irish Republican activity in the city. Then, after two years in Malta, the 1st King's returned to India in 1868.

There is a newspaper mention in 1884 of Band Master Luschwitz and family travelling from Colombo to Bombay on the steam ship "INDUS".

That may be Carl Luschwitz. He was in Ceylon from 1879 until September 1884

Yes, Shaun, I think you are correct.
Carl was Bandmaster with 102nd Regt
I wonder if he was the brother mentioned in the opening post.

The 1880 burial register (wife Mary) and 1882 marriage register show that Joseph was then in the employ of the Nizam of Hyderabad

"Conflicting stories exist as regards how Joseph Henry Luschwitz, a talented German musician, wound up in Hyderabad. One suggests Salar Jung I heard him play in Vienna and asked him to move to Hyderabad. The other that Salar Jung I lured him away from the 2nd Baluchi Regiment of Karachi where he served as their Band Master. Whatever the truth may be, we know for a fact that Mehboob Ali Khan, the sixth Nizam, promoted Joseph Henry from Band Master to Director of Music."
