I am looking for the birth record of a William Sweeney, born in the West Indies in 1809, how do I find these records?

Welcome to RootsChat!

Where have you looked so far?

I have found records on Family Search for ancestors who have lived in out of the way places.  Also doing a Google search can be useful.

Welcome to Rootschat.

I can’t see any birth record in the Overseas Register.

All I can find is a reference to a William SWEENEY 01/01/1851 to 31/03/1851 in Antigua West Indies Private #2032 in the 54th.. (The West Norfolk) Regiment of Foot.

If that his him, how sure are you he was born in the West Indies?

Sure you have this, but just for background here for possible searches.

William Sweeney married Sarah Collins in 1834, so possible confirmation of his father's name is not possible from this event www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:687L-CT19

Confirmation of Sarah's maiden name from one of the birth regs of sons showing in 1851:

SWEENEY, DECIMUS  DUDLEY      MMN - COLLINS
GRO Reference: 1841  M Quarter in KENSINGTON UNION  Volume 03  Page 297

Thanks everyone, especially Monica - yes I have the information that you have offered. I know from the 1851 UK census that William Sweeney was born in the West Indies and I have a copy of his original marriage certificate in 1834 when he married Sarah Collins, unfortunately it doesn’t give any details whatsoever about his date or place of birth, or his fathers name ..
Does anyone know where birth records for the West Indies are held .. or do I need to know exactly where in the West Indies, e.g. which island he was born?

Online access to Antigua births seems to start later than 1809. It may be a question of tracking down parish registers.

You could try:
