But then why would the bracelet turn up in Israel?

Anyway:

Supplement to the London Gazette 13th January 1944

...Mentioned in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in the Middle East
...
Lt. (Qr. Mr) J. Clark (202637)
...
Boyd, Dove, Blakey, Burdon

That's a good point, maybe he was in the 2nd battalion before he was commissioned.  In any case, I still don't think that just because he wasn't with the 1st Bn in 1948 that necessarily means he had left the army or died.

The OP may have more luck with the regimental museum as officers' careers tended to be better documented in official histories etc (ie not relying on his service documentation which is still at the MOD). If the A&SH had a regimental journal that might well document the comings and goings of officers.

Welcome to rootschat ganerez.  :)

You’ve come to the right place for help, as evidenced already by what Gibel, Andy and Alan have found.

Depending on how much trouble and expense you would like to go to, you could purchase James Clark’s service record from the MOD (Ministry of Defence) but there is a cost of £30 and a wait of about a year. A death certificate for the soldier also needs to be provided, though I believe there is a version of the service record for non family members however I don’t know if that gives you the personal details (such as NOK) that you are looking for. The cost and wait time is not ideal however.

Unfortunately such a common name will make the search more difficult, and we will need to find something to identify him (age, next of kin, place of birth etc) before searching for him further in census, BMD records etc.

Ganerez, if you reply here a couple more times, the personal messaging system will be activated. This can be useful in case someone needs to contact you privately, perhaps if living relatives are found. (We are not allowed to name living people on this forum).

One last thought …. I’m not sure if it is still possible, but the medal office at Imjin Barracks used to give information about soldier’s medal entitlements. I wonder if you (or someone UK based) contacted them with his name and number, would they be able to provide information about what medals he received, when and where they were sent, and to whom they were sent? That could be James himself or family and may indicate if he survived, and would at least give you an address.  :-\

I think you should send an email with all the details to the A&SH old Comrades Association (via the Regimental Museum - details above) and ask them to publicise the story to their members. Or use their Facebook page. Hopefully that will turn up someone who knew of him or his family.  Even if his family can't be found, the museum might like to add the tag to their collection.

Hi there,
I am very interested in following this story as my line of Clarks come from Alloa Scotland and the name (albeit common) James is very prominent in our family. I am still working on the tree and have predominantly followed the line to New Zealand where I am from. Out of interest have you noted there was also a J E J Clark (2973971) in the Argyll and Sutherland highlanders around the same time as James and his name also appears in the newspaper article 13TH Janurary 1944. After a search it appears they miss printed his service number and it is actually 5973971. Family maybe ???
I have searched both these soldiers on Forces War Records but not come up with much more information -J Clark (202637) only gives me his service number and Duty Locations along with the obvious rank, nationality and Regiment.
I'm about to start my 84 hour work week of night shifts but once done will follow this up more on my week off. Very interesting indeed and hopefully a family member can be located, even better if it was my family  :)

Hi everybody
I received this group photo of the officers of the 1st Battalion of the A&SH taken in 1941 Khartum Sudan ,far left in the middle row is Lieutenant James Clark, can anyone identify him or perhaps any of the other officers in the photo and maybe that way we will be able to get some more helpful information

Hi Ganerez and welcome to Rootschat, your photo didn't attach, your photo needs to be below 500kbs and have a unique name, if you try to repost, you will need to change the file name. Just add an X to it.
