Name of Interred
« on: Wednesday 07 December 22 13:48 GMT (UK) »
Good afternoon,

I am trying to decipher the surname of Mary shown on the attached burial register image, who died 30 April 1864.

Mary Se?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Regards,

Janet

Whilst not answering your post, all the other names died in the jq-dq 1864 Dewsbury. There does not appear to be suitable Mary with surname Se* listed in that quarter in 1864. Her entry does appear to be added at a different time to the others.

Good afternoon John,

I have already looked Mary up in the Dewsbury and West Riding March and June quarters, for surname beginning with Se, Sc or Le, without success, but thank you for looking.

I am hoping that someone my be able to decipher Mary's correct surname.

Regards,

Janet

FindMyPast has a parish burial record (transcript only) of -
Mary Seminton?, age 23, bur 30 Apr 1864, place Rehoboth Congregational, Morley.

The "?" reflects the transcriber's uncertainty.

Have been checking the 1861 Census for a Mary, age 23 with a surname resembling the image without success.

It could be Mary had married between the Census and death, but there doesn't seem to be a name in the '61 Census for that locale that might "fit" the image.

It could be written Semisterr.

There is this possibility in the Death index …

SIMISTER, MARY       23
GRO Reference: 1864  J Quarter in LEEDS  Volume 09B  Page 285

Does the register give her age?

I believe Bookbox has correctly revealed Mary's surname as Semisterr (Simister.)  Further digging, excuse the pun, shows that Mary (23) is buried in the Richardson plot, a Mary Richardson born, GRO: 1840 Jun quarter, Dewsbury  married James Simister, 6 Jul 1863, St Johns, Leeds, Mary's father William (shopkeeper) is interred in the same plot as Mary.

Thank you to all who contributed.
