Ancestry family tree - can I split it into separate smaller trees?
« on: Wednesday 07 December 22 14:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I've started a family tree on Ancestry and have a lot of information in there covering maternal and paternal sides of my family.

Perhaps a rookie error but, as it's grown, I've wished that I had started 4 separate trees - one for each of my grandparents' families as I'm finding it unwieldy to navigate the one, large tree that now has branches goes off in all directions!

Is there a simple way to do this?  Or a site with guides on how to use Ancestry that I could check out for answers?  I haven't yet found it on Ancestry's site.

best wishes
Bella

There is no simple way to split your tree on Ancestry.  If you use software to also keep a copy of your tree then it would be easier to delete your current tree and upload 4 separate ones as gedcom's from your software.

Otherwise it is a painstaking process of copying your current tree 3 times and saving each with a different name and then going through and deleting the people you don't want from that particular tree.

However, a word of warning, if you are going to go down the DNA route now or later, then it is much better to have one tree covering all bases to use to attach yours and other people's dna too.

Thanks Pheno.

DNA aspect - I've not done that as yet so thanks for the heads up about it being better to have one tree for that.
