Child born at Sea
« on: Monday 12 December 22 22:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi there I wonder if anyone has any advice as I am trying to trace the background of a female relative (Maria Pierpoint) born approx 1852/1853 at sea and is described as a British Subject - father William Pierpoint. She appears to be brought up by a local family called Barnards. Later married John Pilbeam in Brighton. Any pointers regarding births at sea would be most welcome.

Hi there

Do you have her marriage certificate?  Does it give an occupation for her father or say if he is deceased?

Marriage witness names can also be helpful so please list those also.

Thankyou all for taking the trouble to reply. It would appear as though the Barnards brought Maria up as per census listings and Joseph Barnard is her witness at her wedding. The only occasion her father William Pierpoint is mentioned is on her marriage certificate Dec 24th 1870 as a labourer. Im at a loss to find out where listings for children born at sea might appear likewise deaths assuming her mother dies in child birth. All assistance is great appreciated.

Maria Pilbeam died at Brighton in 1918, age 68 which ties in with being born in 1850.

1861 census as her with Joseph and Ellen Barnard and stated as Niece.

Where did the information come from that she was supposedly born at sea? The census has her birth place as Brighten Sussex.

Her birth certificate might shed some light on to it. [Birth index posted by tonepad on #2 post on here]

Maybe the death of her mother Susanna
