Probate: was his wife still alive?
« on: Saturday 24 December 22 09:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I have the probate entry for John Henry Lee, I know when he died. What I don't know is when his wife (Alice Greenwood) died. In his probate entry it says:

Quote
LEE, John Henry of 1 Newton-avenue Withington Manchester died 17 March 1945 Probate Manchester 23 July to The Public Trustee. Effects £3333 14s. 7d.

Does the fact that it says "to The Public Trustee" suggest that his wife might have died before him?

Many thanks
HAY - Aberdeen, Shetland, etc.
LEE - Todmorden, etc.
BELSHAW - Farnworth, Bolton, Wigan, Manchester, etc.
ALLINSON - Pontefract, Leeds, etc.
UPWARD - Isle of Wight

Not necessarily, she could have been unwilling to act as an executor or vulnerable in some way for instance.

John's death certificate will tell you whether his wife was still alive or not.

You could also download a copy of his will for £1.50 to see if she is mentioned.  His death was registered in the Manchester RD.

There is no Alice Lee death matching her 1939 age between 1939-1945 in the same RD
