Will of John Lyntot 1657
« on: Saturday 31 December 22 15:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I'm hoping someone may be able to help me with deciphering some words or phrases in the following will of John Lyntot.

In  the first extract he mentions his son Ockenden & his heirs etc. Ockenden recieves John's messuages, lands and premesis in Slaugham but I am puzzles by the word at the end of that line [under messuages]. It says "in Slaugham upon his....." but what's that last word?

In the line below the will reads "which were my brother Matthews"

Would the phrase "which were my brothers" imply that Matthew was now dead?

Many Thanks

Matt

Last word: this Condic[ion] (with a contraction mark at the end)

Matthew etc: copyhold land did often pass from one family member to another at a death, but if Matthew was alive and decided he had no use for the land, there might have been a way for him to pass or sell it to his brother. In other words, I'm not sure you can draw any definite conclusion from this.

If Matthew was dead, you might have expected it to say 'my late brother Matthew'.
Not conclusive that it doesn't. As arthurk says, it's difficult to know at this point in time whether he was deceased or not.

What does it go on to the say the 'Condicion' was? (continuing on from this clip). Does it give any more clues?

Thanks for those bits of info guys. I'll add them to what I have already deciphered and see if I can make any sense. Luckily I can read a good deal of the Will apart from the odd word here and there like these.

Hopefully with this info I can put it all together.

Thanks again
Matt
