William Boulding late of Boughton Aluph
« on: Sunday 01 January 23 15:21 GMT (UK) »
This inventory, William Boulding late of Boughton Aluph 1627   PRC/10/61/40 has the appraisers signature: William Tetherton and mark of Richard Ballden? Dalliden?

What are the best guesses for Richard's surname please?

(Ballden is likely as Boulding and Balden are fequently mixed up)

No useful "B"s to compare, alas. Rather scrappy handwriting.

I think the surname might be Calldoe. The first letter caused me most trouble, but it appears elsewhere, most easily seen in cheste on the 4th line.

I agree with arthurk that surname starts with C
(see also last word on line 6)

Thanks for posting a bigger clip.

I agree with arthurk that it starts with a C. I think it might end -ar or -er, so perhaps Calldar or Callder. But I'm sure it isn't Balld....

There don't appear to be any Calldoes locally in Kent (not one) from what I can see but that doesn't mean it isn't.

The first letter is the most problematic I agree. There is a capital B but this doesnt look the same as the mystery letter...

Calldar looks possible and there are a few Calldars in the next door parish of Wye. I think it might well be Calldar (a name I've never hear of but which clearly exists in Wye, Kent). I suspect this is a corruption of Coulter.

Richard Caldar married Elyzabeth Dod 1617 Oct 15 Wye.

This is probably our man. Many thanks as ever for all these really helpful suggestions.
