Could anyone help with the 1851 Census for Gartsherrie, Coatbridge for,
James Bell   42 Ireland
Jean Bell      36 Ireland
Francis Bell  11 Ireland
Mary Bell        6 Ireland

The 1861 Census is as follows,
1861 Census Old Monkland  Mid Gartsherrie 652 2/23/13-
253 Harritos Row [2 rooms]
James Bell   head  marr  52y pig iron lab b Ireland
Jean                      wife   46y                          "
Francis                   son   21y  coalminer         "
Andrew                  son    9y scholar b LanarkshireMonklands
George                   son    5y     "                 "                 "

In a later Census Andrew Bell gives his birthplace as Gartsherrie & members of the family lived in the area until the early 1900s.

John

Falkyrn,

Yes, you have found me the right Bell family and given me a previously unknown son in James Bell (aged 14).
You mention that you do not have full access to the 1851 Census, what extra, if anything would the full census tell me?

Many thanks for your speedy reply, much appreciated.
John

The full census will have an address, possibly occupation(s) and may have place of birth rather than just Ireland (if you're lucky)

Thank you for the info, I will find out how to access the original census & see what turns up.

I don't know how you are able to search the 1851 Index that you have but from other information that I have it appears that there is another son (I do not have his name) in the family still living in 1855.
Would it be possible to search for a;
male Bell, aged 14 to 17, probably a boarder, born in Ireland in the Old Monkland area?

Many thanks,
John

Sorry, no luck there are only 2 male Bell's between 13 & 18 born in Ireland and living in Old monkland.

James whose details you have with the rest of the family and Joseph also aged 14 living with another Bell Family.

P.S. the index is available on CD from the Lanarkshire family History Group

I've checked the Glasgow 1851 index ..... unfortunately it does not give place of birth and you are then left with in excess of 75 male Bells between the ages of 13 & 18.
