Help deciphering word in 1881 census disabilities column
« on: Friday 06 January 23 17:09 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone tell me what the word in the disabilities column of this page of the 1881 census says? It doesn’t appear to be any of the options listed. Thanks.

Although the first letter is different from the 'A' of Appledore, I think it looks like Airiciples, which is presumably an attempt at Erysipelas.

As you say, it's not one of the conditions asked about in 1881, and that would be why someone has crossed it out, but maybe the householder thought it was sufficiently debilitating to be worth a mention.

I did wonder if the word began with the letter a but thought the whole page every capital A (for place names like Appledore and names such as Ann) are all written with a small “a”. It would make sense for it to be crossed out if it was a medical condition that shouldn’t have been written down.
