Here's the page of text it came from for cross-comparison to other letters written:

Tullylish parish records 1846
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633253#page/22/mode/1up

My best guess is McVERNEY

I agree it looks like McTurvey though.

Alan they could be different names as these are two different entries.
The Mary one you posted first I read as Mctierney. I agree the second one Alice looks more like Mcturvey.

On the second one with Alice doesn't the dot after the second letter mean that letter is C?

Thanks so much by the way.

I checked and the two names are meant to be the same family name. Might have spelling variation.

I wonder about McInerney for the first one. There are variations on that surname in the parish.
If you look to the top of that page, there is a Mary Jane Gribbon to Michael and Mary. I thought Mary was McInerney but she is transcribed as McTierney.

I can’t see other records for any Alice Mc*y. The letter is difficult to decide on.
There is no bottom curl for a ‘C’ and no stroke or loop on the top side for a ‘K’.
It might be McKervey or McInerney  :-\

Can you actually search the Tullylish microfilm for terms?  ;D  I've been doing it all by hand so far.
