Lookup please - Catharine Gowen/Gawen, Durham?
« on: Friday 13 January 23 10:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks, I am getting nowhere with finding Catharine Gowen/Gawen/.
I know she married Martin Wind 26 March 1800 in Gateshead. However, I also find  that the record is 1801 on some listings, not sure why.  But I do not find any baptism family or record prior to her marriage. It's not critical as I am focused on the Wind line but its frustrating when its right there and I cannot cross it off.
Its possible something may show in Census records. It is also possible that she is from outside Durham County and the reason I posted here rather than on the Durham group.
Thanks so much for any hnts.

This is how the record appears on freereg, which happens to be Lady Day.

Catharine GOWEN to Martin WIND Marriage   25 Mar 1800   Durham   Gateshead : St Mary

One of the notes one the child’s baptism on freereg below.

5th Daughter. Father native of Chester le Street, Mother daughter of GALVEN of Sunderland

The name is incorrect but the other baptisms state Gowen. I wonder if Catherine was born as McGowen in Ireland.

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Same one as post #2. Colin.  There is a death in 1844 but that was for a Catherine aged 0. A birth corresponds, so not that one   :-\

Hi Colc and Gadget. I am impressed, thanks for the quick hints.
These are the children I had attached to the marriage  :
Eleanor WIND   Baptism   27 Apr 1800   Durham   Gateshead : St Mary : Gateshead   Martin   Catharine   Gowen   sinker   1st dau
Mary WIND   Baptism   20 Oct 1805   Durham   Gateshead : St Mary : Gateshead   Martin   Catharine   Galven   Sinker   5th dau
Robert WIND   Baptism   11 Feb 1810   Durham   Washington : Holy Trinity : Washington   Martin   Catharine   Gawen      2nd son
John WIND   Baptism   11 Feb 1810   Durham   Washington: Holy Trinity : Washington   Martin   Catharine   Gawen      3rd son

The italic is the info I have added, Father, Mother, notes
The marriage to Catherine appears to be his second marriage. So he had kids from the first marriage. I seem to be still missing some though according to the notes counting children on the baptism records. I also noted the name difference pointed out.

Oh, I had not noticed as I was so focused on the mother, the last two boys have the same baptism (twins?) or simply batched at the same baptism?

Have you followed the children up?  Maybe one of the offspring might have moved to the west of Gateshead/Chester le Street?   Some of my kin moved from coal mine to coal mine and into the broad Weardale area.

Also, if Catherine was born in 1766, she could also have been married before, so it might be worth looking for a Catherine marrying a Gowan (variations).
