Hi All  :)

We're trying to trace my half brother's biological father. (For info, we're not trying to make contact, if anything we'd just like a name and photo for our own curiosity).

We've done a 23 and Me DNA test and found some 2nd Cousins on his biological father's side on there.  One of the 2nd cousins, is related via great-grandparents, and she kindly shared her great-grandparents names.

The names of which are:
Edward Kelly 1843 – Near Louisburg
Bridget Scahill Approx 1846 – Near Louisburg

I haven't shared the other set of great grandparents names because I believe, with the other cousins matching to me on the site, listed at Kelly, that the above are the set of great-grandparents we share.

Now, another kind man, helped me find the children of the above great-grandparents:

Mary Kelly - 1881 (1911 Census)
Patrick Kelly – 1882 (1901 Census) - Moved to America (This is my 2nd cousins grandfather)
Norah Kelly - 1884 (1901 Census) Not on 1911 Census, potential emigration?
Edward Kelly Jr – 1885 (911 Census)

Does anyone know how I found out the names of who the above married / children they had?

I think that would get me very close to finding out potential name of his biological father but I will admit, I'm not a natural at this. My brain has never hurt more trying to figure out relations and what it all means. Hats off to those of you who are good at this. Columbo I am not.

Hi - Apologies, I only realised after that I didn’t post the area.

It’s in Louisburg, County Mayo, Ireland.

Also to note, I’ve realised I’ve got all the birth years wrong for the children so these are to be ignored. This is clearly not  my forte.

Any advice on how I would proceed with my search would be greatly appreciated.

From FamilySearch.org, children of the couple are:

Anne b. 20 August 1874, Louisburgh
Michael, b. 8 June 1867, Louisburgh
Bridget, b. 4 September 1876, Westport
Mary, b. 7 July 1871
Patrick, b. 10 October 1879

The full registrations will be available on irishgenealogy.ie. I see marriages for Nora and Patrick in Massachusetts also available on FamilySearch so their birth records should also be available on FamilySearch.

Nora married Peter Aloysius Hynes in 1922 in Clinton, Massachusetts.
Patrick married Mary Navin in 1918 in Clinton, Massachusetts

Look for records in the registration district of Westport (where Louisburgh is located) on irishgenealogy.ie  You should be able to pick up the other children's marriages as well.

Welcome to RootsChat!

You haven’t actually mentioned where your half brother was born. Was it the U.S. or Ireland? Just so we know whether we are looking for descendants of Edward & Bridget who emigrated or stayed in Ireland.

Hi - Sorry if this is cryptic below but I’m conscious I’m only allowed to look for deceased relatives on this forum and apologies if I’ve over stepped.

So my brother was conceived and born in London in 1985, his biological father was Irish - we’re certain about this due to the accent. It’s the only real detail we have.

So we’d be looking for the descendants of Edward Kelly and Bridget that remained in Ireland.

Due to the Kelly name featuring a lot in DNA matches for cousins, we’d be interested in advice on how to trace their son’s childrens, assuming our logic is correct about the surname not being wiped out by marriage by the daughters.

Have you considered uploading your half brother's DNA to another provider? MyHeritage allows you to transfer the raw DNA data from 23&Me to their database for free. You can also pay for add-ons if you would like to do so.

My father is Irish and he tested with Ancestry. Ancestry has the biggest database, but it does require you to test again with their own kit; you cannot upload your DNA data from another provider to their site. He got a load of hits there, including 3 first cousins and a first cousin once-removed. However, I also uploaded his raw DNA data to MyHeritage and got quite a few hits, including 2 first cousins (1 having also tested on Ancestry). If you could find a first cousin (or maybe even closer?), it could make this search so much easier.

Hi - Yes, we’ve literally just sent off his DNA to Ancestry so hoping we might get a few more hits on that.

And thanks for the tip about MyHeritage, we will do that as well - much appreciated  :)
