Did Martin Wind marry three times?
« on: Saturday 14 January 23 14:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks. Sorry, this relates to the Catherine Gowen story but I thought it better to start a new thread.
Martin Wind born 1755, "appears" to have married three times, and I think he is the one that marries Catherine Gowen/Gowen but I cannot be sure. I seem to be able to attribute THREE marriages to him, but maybe I am just WRONG and there is a different Martin I have not yet found.

The Martin Wind I'm focused on is baptised 6 Apr 1755 in Chester le Street, Durham, England, Son of William Wind and Mary (Hind) Wind. I am proposing that he marries as following :
Husband of Eleanor (Bell) Wind — married 26 Dec 1785 in Chester le Street, Durham, England
Husband of Ursula (Thompson) Wind — married 1789 in St James' Church, Hamsterley, Durham, England
Husband of Catherine (Gowan) Wind — married 26 Mar 1801 in Gateshead, Durham, England, United Kingdom

There is another Martin Wind, born 18 Jun 1787 in Lumley, Durham, England, son of Martin Wind and Eleanor (Bell) Wind who I am sure marries  Mary (Gordon) Wind, 23 May 1818 in Chester le Street. Each of these marriages are sourced via FindMyPast.
I think Martin1755, married three times, the dates seem to line up as do the children of each marriage. While Martin and Catherine were aging, the last child was born 1810, making Catherine 44 years old.  If I check burials on DRO, there are only two Martins "in play", the births are approximate
Burial                                            Born
1838, Lamesley St. Andrew,      Martin Wind   abt 1747   Eighton Banks
1837, Monkwearmouth St. Peter,   Martin Wind   abt 1791   Southwick

1832, Chester-le-Street St. Mary   Martin Wind   abt 1829   Great Lumley
1843, South Hetton Holy Trinity     Martin Wind   abt 1833
1848, Monkwearmouth St. Peter     Martin Wind   abt 1847   Colliery

How can I be sure, is there something I am missing?
Am I missing something like another Martin or was Martin unlucky with his wives and remarried at each stage? The marriages are sourced from FindMyPast and Durhamrecordsonline. Any suggestions or thoughts are super welcome.

Breaking this down into sections:

Martin Wind m. Eleanor Bell 26th December 1785 and had issue:
- Martin Wind, baptised 18th June 1787, son of Martin Wind, occ: sinker, and his wife, Eleanor, of Lumley.

Eleanor Wind of Lumley, wife of Martin Wind, buried in 1787 in Chester Le Street.

Martin Wind, of Chester Le Street, m. Ursula Thompson 6th December 1789 and had issue:
- Dorothy Wind, baptised 18th March 1792, daughter of Martin Wind, occ: sinker, and his wife, Ursula, of Lumley.

Ursula Wind, aged 29, buried 16th July 1798 in Gateshead.

Martin Wind m. Catherine Gowen 26th March 1801 in Gateshead and had issue:
- Eleanor Wind (1800) (before the marriage?) - also, there seems to be 2 baptisms for this one?
- Mary Wind (1805), daughter of Martin Wind, occ: sinker, and his wife, Catherine Gawen
- Robert Wind (born 1808)
- John Wind (born 1809)
- Hannah Wind, baptised 16th January 1814, daughter of Martin Wind, occ: sinker, and his wife, Catherine, of Usworth.

Everything seems to add up, including the occupation. Seems to me this is the same Martin Wind.

Agreed.

FindMyPast has burial records for an Eleanor and Ursula Wind that fall neatly into place for Martin's 2nd and 3rd marriages and, importantly, include info. that points to your Martin.

Hi Queenie and Hanes. Thank you for the pointers.
I had also factored the occupation and dates. But its good to have it validated.
I was never sure what a sinker was, it seems that they were those that sank the vertical shafts to start mining. They were considered highly skilled workers.
Thanks so much for you for the help.
