What does this say for profession?
« on: Sunday 15 January 23 19:56 GMT (UK) »
Hello!

I'm trying to decipher what a ship passenger list says the profession of my great grandfather was; However, I'm struggling. The record is of a ship that sailed from England to the United States in the early 1900's.

Any help would be dearly appreciated!

Not too sure about "roller".

Cigarette mkr?

That is far more promising than my initial thoughts of cigarette "roller".

Before reading the other replies I thought the occupation was  “Cigarette Mkr” which presumably means Maker, but may be Manufacturer.

Depending on dates and events, I would check his occupation in the next American census or in the births/marriages of his children, if there were any and if that information was recorded. Even deaths?

I would also look at the England census 1911, 1901, 1891 etc. his occupation on any or all of those will probably help you decide if he was the boss = Manufacturer or the worker = Maker.  :)

Is it cigars - cigarette Inds (industries) and I think cigars / cigarette could be written by different people with cigarette added later with darker ink  no 'dot' over the 'I' the ' g's ' look different and the ' R's '

cigars - cigarette maker seems most likely though
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth
