Lookup Please- William Wind (Cow Close)
« on: Monday 16 January 23 15:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks, I am back on the William Wind of Cow Close Trail. Here is what I know of him :
William Wind, Born about 1730 - ESTIMATED ONLY in Lamesley, Durham, England, United Kingdom.  [father?], [mother?], [spouse?]  He is the father of children Margaret Wind, Thomas Wind, William Wind, John Wind and Henry (Wind) Wynd. Died about 19 Jan 1770 at about age 40 in Lamesley, Durham, England. There are five children attributed to William Wind of Lamesly. Not to be confused with William Wind of Lumley born 1731
Baptisms Chester-le-Street 1755 Margaret Wind Cow Close William
Baptisms Chester-le-Street 1758 Thomas Wind Cow Close William
Baptisms Chester-le-Street 1761 William Wind Cow Close William
Baptisms Chester-le-Street 1767 John Wind Cow Close William
Baptisms Chester-le-Street 1770 Henry Wind Cow Close William

On Genuki, a search for Cow Close places it over near Easington where there was a coalmine. However as discussed on Rootschat, CowClose, Lamesley is quite close to what was Ravensworth Hall, near the Nature Reserve. There was a mill and some cottages it appears.

William just seems to drop in out of nowhere. There are other William Winds, but I do not seem to make a connection to his birth or marriage and wife of 5 kids. I cannot access Ancestry and I wonder if there is anyone kind enough to cross-check if there is a record or tree (heaven forbid), that may give a hint of him.

Most trees place him as associated with a wife of Mary (Hind) Wind with parents William Wind, Mary Wind (born Coxon).... these are INCORRECT. That William is of Greater Lumley as discussed here on Rootschat and NOT William of Lamesley. Im looking for any hint of this William of (Lamesley) possibly born elsewhere but he is a mystery just now.
Thanks for any hints or ideas.

Thanks ColC, I did see this one but was uncertain, but I think it may be my only lead if nothing new turns up on Ancestry. Thanks for checking for me, much appreciated. I will dig around this lead.

Hi Folks, I may have found something but it needs testing.
Ive come across a William Wind Burial 1819 in Lamesley on FindMyPast. The record states he was aged 93, making a birth of about 1726. Now I realize that is probably a guess, but he seems to be an odd man out. I will check all deaths/Births to see who matches what.
It would be great if he turns up in an early Census, but ATM, I dont see him in any Census.
Regards all.

The burial record on freereg gives abode as Eighton Banks.

This looks like his son’s burial age 55 abode Washington.
William WIND   Burial   26 May 1817   Durham   Lamesley : St Andrew : Bishop's Transcript

This is the earliest baptism at Lamesley on freereg, son of William
John WIND   Baptism   26 Jul 1767   Durham   Lamesley : St Andrew : Bishop's Transcript

There is some information on https://www.genuki.org.uk about
St Andrew, Lamesley, Church of England

It includes Indexes to the Baptisms 1730-1797:- It records all the surnames in this period but there are no Wind’s.

The records I posted earlier are Bishops,Transcripts.

Hi Colin, thanks for that info. I am building an Excel file to cross reference all the Williams I can find to see if someone doesnt fit the pattern. Slow going....  Using DRO to scan baptism, birth marriage and comparing to FindMyPast. Variable results so far.
