WALKER / BRITTEON - Lowestoft
« on: Wednesday 07 September 05 11:26 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information re my ancestors.

My GM was Rhoda Gertrude Walker, born in Lowestoft in 1890. She married a Peter Stark from North Shields.

Her parents were Peter Walker and Florence Britteon. (from her birth certificate)

I believe they may have lived in the Seago St area of Lowestoft.

Help tracing leads will be apreciated.

Many thanks

Throughout her life my GM was known as 'Gertie', even though her first name was Rhoda.

The census reports do not show her husband Peter Walker at that address.  Is that due to the fact that he was either a fisherman or mariner, or had he died around the time of my GM's birth in 1890?

Any links with other Walkers or Britteons?

Alan

Going by the fact Florence is down as married and not a widow in these censuses must mean Peter is around somewhere.  Trouble is there are too many Peters to be sure if you have the right one.  Do you know his birthplace at all.  Couldn't seem to find any suitable candidates in Suffolk in 1891 or 1901.
I can't seem to find the family in 1881.

For what it's worth, here's a long shot from the 1881 census:

Vessel "Sea Flower", Lowestoft:

Herbert Sandwell - married - 24 - Master - b. Broadstairs, Kent
William Wright - unmarried - 19 - Mate - b. Carlton Cowhill, Suffolk
Peter Walker - unmarried - 21 - Seaman - b. Liverpool, Lancs
George Long - 17 - Apprentice - b. Carlton Cowhill, Suffolk
William Long - 14 - Apprentice - b. Lowestoft

I concede defeat, I can't even find a Florence Britteon(various spellings) in the 1861 or 71 census.  Trying to see if I could find her with parents, but no luck.
Maybe someone else will be able to do better.

Unable to help further on that regarding Peter Walker, or Florence Britteon.

My GF, Peter Stark was a trawlerman, who met my GM when he was stationed in Lowestoft during WW1 -- He was in the Royal Naval Reserve - on trawler / minesweeper duties.  I believe Gertrude was involved in the fishing industry. and I guess that her father may have been a seafarer, and that both he and Florence may not have originated in Suffolk.

The Starks were from a line of Scottish seafarers, who fished all down the east coast following the herring.

Peter Stark's maternal line can be traced to Dover in 1805 and Southwold via the Mummery family, which also suggests a marine connection.

As you said, a long shot but unlikely, as he is recorded as unmarried, and Florence Walker (nee Britteon)'s daughter mary was born in 1877.

For what it's worth, here's a long shot from the 1881 census:

Vessel "Sea Flower", Lowestoft:

Herbert Sandwell - married - 24 - Master - b. Broadstairs, Kent
William Wright - unmarried - 19 - Mate - b. Carlton Cowhill, Suffolk
Peter Walker - unmarried - 21 - Seaman - b. Liverpool, Lancs

William Long - 14 - Apprentice - b. Lowestoft
