Good morning. By way of trying to overcome my brick wall, I was considering buying the book Pre-1841 censuses and population listings in the British Isles.

I was wondering if anyone owned this book and if so, does it contain many London records? I am still searching for the records of two brick wall ancestors and wondered if this has helped anyone successfully?

Thanks!

Censuses pre-1841, where they exist, only contain the name of heads of household.

The University of Essex, Department of History published an easy to follow PDF file in 2004 entitled Census Schedules and Listings, 1801-1831: An Introduction and Guide by Richard Wall, Matthew Woollard and Beatrice Moring

Not entirely accurate. They are always worth investigating as occasionally some enumerators went above and beyond what was required, so they can be more informative and provide enough clues for you to work out family connections.

I have one particularly informative 1801 census for a place my family lived,  it gives full names, married, single or widowed, child male or female . It also include the occupations.
CHOULES All ,  COKER Harwich Essex & Rochester Kent
COLE Gt. Oakley, & Lt. Oakley, Essex.
DUNCAN Kent
EVERITT Colchester,  Dovercourt & Harwich Essex
GULLIVER/GULLOFER Fifehead Magdalen Dorset
HORSCROFT Kent.
KING Sturminster Newton, Dorset. MONK Odiham Ham.
SCOTT Wrabness, Essex
WILKINS Stour Provost, Dorset.
WICKHAM All in North Essex.
WICKHAM Medway Towns, Kent from 1880
WICKHAM, Ipswich, Suffolk.

Oh that's fascinating! I would love to find out more about my two. I have gone back on to London Lives and there appear to now be more records than there have been previously and I have a potential lead from the workhouse/poor union records (which would explain quite a lot). My two married in 1810 in London but no firm records (aside from being named in baptism records and him on marriage certificates) for them either before or after this date.

Some pre-1841 records contain more than just head of household information here are two sources I found my people on:-

-"Returns Of Papists 1767 Diocese Of Chester" - Book - Transcribed under the direction of E.S. Worrall (includes RC households lists some of my Lancashire RCs appear all named, occupations, ages, district and how long residents)

-"Rev. Landsborough's Lists for the Parish of Stevenston" - Transcribed by Mairi Frew with the kind permission of Jill McColl of North Ayrshire Library in Ardrossen and posted on www.ayrshireroots.com (1819 has head of household, occupation, wife, names of all children and address)

The 1821 census of Trowbridge Wiltshire was available some years ago. I presume in bookform.  It gave location , name of head of hoisehold and how ,amy m amd females in each house. I can't recollect if iy also gave trade.

There is also a Bedfornshire publication I think of Thurleigh in the late 1700s ot early 1800s though that information may have been extraxted from a source other than census
